In some reloading manuals I have seen data for reloading 357 mag, showing different loads for rounds destined to be used in rifles than those for handguns.
I don't think that the round was designed with for two different loads; or am I confused? What if by error some rounds get mixed up?

There won't be a problem, as in "rifle ammo blows up pistol".
Rifle loads, in pistol cartridges, would probably be loaded with a slower powder, to take advantage of the 20" or so barrel, instead of the normal 6" of a pistol. Possibly rifle loads would use a different bullet style/shape, so they will be sure to work through the action. Revolvers don't care about bullet shape, but lever rifles are sometimes picky.
