No,no,no,no,no!
Stop looking at knives that look like they should be in a cartoon!
Do some research. Either that, or I'm going to start making some "antique" knives to sell you! I could use the money.

Already tried to sell him one of mine. That didn't work either.

How about one of these?

Hmmm, you could make a kind of a Bowie out of one of these.

The only markings on it is a crown over a W on the ricasso. It's for a .69 musketoon.

OFC, I was just looking at the online catalog for the next Rock Island auction and, guess what?, there are some Civil War era bowie knives being offered in an upcoming auction. Check them out at http://www.rockislandauction.com
I haven't been through the whole catalog yet but lots 93 through 98 seem to be right up your alley. Also lots 439, 1079, 1131 and 3228. You might want to take Bill DeShivs along with you. I'll bet he will have an opinion on each of them. Personally, if it were me... I'd listen to him.

On-line through Proxibid, OFC. It is an online catalog but the sales take place on-site (in their new quarters) and also over the telephone. It is a good auction house. Take a little time to look over their web site for the different ways they accept bids - you'll probably find one that works for you.

What did you think about the knives they're offering?

OFC,
Before spending large amounts of money on a knife (especially on the Internet), you should visit shows and handle as many older pieces as you can. Buy books- "Steel Canvas" by R.W. Wilson has good pictures of many older knives. Levine's books are also good to have. Stay away from "Confederate" knives, as there are way more fakes than originals. Not following my advice will almost guarantee you will be taken. As I said before-bowie knives are not my area of expertise but I have learned quite a bit about them. Be wary of any dealer or auctioneer. Very recently, I advised an Ebay seller that his "1800s English folding bowie" was actually made in India in the 1960s. He cursed me and told me his knife had been appraised by Greg Martin (auctioneer) at $2000! I offered to sell him another one for $200, but never heard back from him!

Belgian made, then- for any of a number of export muskets. Nice shape, too.

The button and spring were replaced and the blade has some minor pitting. The whole thing was cleaned by electrolysis before I got it.
