A good quality revolver for concealed carry is the Ruger LCR..light weight..easy to shoot, and due to the polymer frame and rubber grips, you can shoot it all day long at the range and not come home sore. Ask my wife, she loves it, but disdains shooting my S&W model 36 or the 60. You would love this revolver and if you can, try one at your local range!!

http://www.ballistics101.com/38_special.php

Using these two links you can see for yourself the difference between the .44spl, and the .38spl.

38 Special +P GDHP 125grs. 248ft/lbs. mussle energy 945fps muzzle velocity

44 Special GDHP 200grs. 340ft/lbs. mussle energy 875fps muzzle velocity

They list most of the more popular ammo on the market, take your pick.

If hiking in mountain lion/bear country, which really means out my front door, I carry a S&W 329 in a Krammer horsehide pancake holster. Very light and comfortable. First 3 chambers are 210 gr. Silver Tips which are quite mild compared to the next 310 gr hard cast Garretts. In town it is all Silver Tips.

I normally carry a P238 but it is in the shop right now. I am carrying my Ruger LCR in a Desantis Nemesis pocket holster. The whole rig weighs right at 18 ounces.

I assume we're talking "town carry" here. For that purpose I have several that
I carry including a Taurus Titanium 2" in 45 Colt, a Taurus Titanium 2.5" in 41
Mag., and a Rossi M720C 3" in 44 Special. All of these shoot and carry well,
but lately I have mostly been carrying a Ruger LCR 38 Spec. with Crimson Trace
laser. Not as powerful as the others, but it's more compact and I love its 13
ounce weight and its wonderful DA pull. Also, most "social problems" occur at
night, and that's where the laser really pays off.

Winchester Silver Tips are frangable bullets, they won't give you the penetration that is needed on a bear, or mountain lion, and possibaly not in a human! My advice is to skip the Silver Tips all together! Even Winchester doesn't recomend the Silver Tips in a .44 Mag, for anything larger than deer! The 310gr. Garrettts will do the job, and do it well! http://www.winchester.com/Products/h...ges/X44MS.aspx

Currently, carrying the S&W 638, which I really like. Was carrying the LCR but my daughter appropriated it. I do have a Ruger LC9 which I am becoming familiar with that might be a suitable subcompact for carry. I have a Taurus Slim 709 next to me in my lazy boy as I type this. Like it alot.

After carrying a 2.25", Ruger Sp101, .357 mag., for 8+ years, in an OSW high ride pancake holster, I decided I needed a Ruger LCR, when they came out. Early on the only ones available at my LGS was the .38 special model. So, I bought that.
It is great for a pocket gun, in my Wrangler jeans or my slacks. But, when the .357 models came out, I had to have one of those also.

The .357 Mag. LCR is a little heavy for me, in my pocket. But it fits great in the same holster I use to carry my SP101 in. And, it's about 10 or 12 oz. lighter, too.

So now, my EDC is an LCR, either a .38 in my pocket or a .357 mag. LCR on my belt.

I am carrying a Jennings .22lr auto in a small holster in my pocket. I would like to have better when my finances improve. But until now it will suffice. I have .38 Specials located all over the house in the ready if I need 'em. I just got an inside the pants holster for a 4" .38 Special that was on Ebay for $13.00. It does the job when I go out in the world.
