Default 220 swift for varmints-small game?

Any pros/cons in selecting this calibre.Any better recommendations.
What rifle should I go for.I was looking at savage/remington.
I will be shooting foxes, rabbits and roos, and the odd wild pig.
Medium to long range shooting.
Scope manufacturer advice and magnification

Thanx in advance,

Dim.

Nothing like seeing a crow explode when hit with a 220 Swift.

Id go savage, 12 twist, 24 or 26" heavy barrel. 40-45 gr pills for the foxes and bunnies, 53 gr TSXs for the roos and pigs

Thanks so much for the advice.

Is it true that you must go stainless because of the calibre's reputation of burning normal chrome moly barrels?

its a barrel burner no matter what metal the barrel is made of. It eats the throat away.

The 220 is a great round. But if your going to get in to pigs maybe you should look at the 243.

The Swift's barrel burner reputation is well known yet somewhat undeserved.
If you load it to the max, especially with slow burning powders, then yes you will have a throat erosion problem.
If you back off the load just 100fps the throat will last a lot longer.

Another reason you see burned throats in Swifts is that they were used for hot n heavy prairie dog sessions. Keep the barrel cool and it will last as long as a .22-250.

My last Swift went well over 5000 rounds before I sold it to a neighbor. Its stilli nnailing coyotes out to 300yds.
