No question about it - the 7.6239 in the SKS. Don't forget that the 7.62X39 round is in the same class (roughly) as a .30-30. The .30 M1 Carbine round is a pistol-class round.
I love the .30 Carbine anyway...... Great little round in a fun little carbine. |

I love it also have a IBM and a great shooter accurate to 200 yds also.
But thinking of getting a SKS just to play with as I hear the ammo is much cheaper Steve |

It is way cheaper ammo wise plus it's fun to trick them out! You can't and shouldnt do much to the m1 carbine.

Oh no never to anything to my M1. From what I have read and seen the SKS is pretty also and I think would be more fun stock. I am looking for a Yugo with the crome barrel .

The SKS far out powers the .30 carbine
However lets not bash the little .30 It was designed for a very specific purpose: The army needed a firearm for tankers, engineers, paratroopers etc. The .45 auto pistol was to small for a primary weapon, the M1 Garand was to large to carry. The .30 carbine was made to fill this nitch and was carried by thousands and thousands of dirty-joes.. So is the .30 carbine a pistol or rifle?? The answer is Yes and No. There was a time you couldn`t give away a paratoop folding carbine, they`re now greatly saught after by re-enactors and collectors worldwide..

Looks good, 25yret! I think the M1 Carbine is a great gun, someone should make a .22 based on an M1, or aftermarket stock and forend for a 10/22, like an even-smaller Mini 14, I see too many .22s based off ARs.

Wikipedia says the maximum combat-effective range for the SKS is 550 yards. Never understood was effective range is, I'm assuming it's lethality to humans out to a certain point?

hit a patch near Siem riep in cambodia , the KR all had SKS's , crossing the road a bit up from them was awful hairy that was 800 meters out , , so i'd say stretch the 550 a bit ... you dont wanna be in front of these at almost any real range under 3-4 miles
but for pigs good out to 600 meters all day long |

Just an FYI--None of the Yugo's were manufactured with a chrome bore. Great weapons, but you need to know this.

I had a select fire M1 carbine as a deputy and it was far better than any M4....way more knock down power and a lot more controlable.

I was in The Expeditionary Forces in Vietnam and we used the M-1 Garrand. Even with it's weight that was an exceptional shooting instrument. Their range and punch was exceptional.
The only draw back was inserting a new clip. I had buddies that were wounded and trying to open the breech and inserting a new mag and had difficulty. But, when the newer M- series models came out they were a real blessing. Love the pictures. Thanks. Last edited by Rhuga; 02-16-2012 at 10:51 PM.. |
