Default CMP Garand safety warning

We took delivery of an H&R M1 Garand recently and took it shooting for the first time this weekend. It was having problems with failures to fire and then it doubled. A field inspection showed that the secondary sear was not catching the hammer in recoil and the hammer was following the bolt. That lead to failures to fire and automatic operation (it could have emptied the entire eight round clip, but only doubled, and in that state it was highly illegal, as the BATF will tell you in court!)

Further investigation showed that the hammer spring housing was installed backwards. That means the spring was visible through the cutout in the housing when it was suppose to be out of view. The cutout is there to give clearance for the safety lever which was binding and very hard to apply. The housing, when installed correctly, provide a return spring action for the secondary sear. Assembling the housing inside the trigger group correctly fixed the secondary sear and the safety.

The point? CMP is not inspecting these guns as they issue them for sale. Any technician who is M1 Garand knowledgeable should have immediately seen that the hammer spring housing was installed backwards as the spring would be visible and that is not normal. So if you buy one of these CMP guns inspect it carefully before firing it as CMP is not doing that. I notified CMP of their mistake and MAYBE they will change the allocation process to include an inspection of the guns before sale(??).

Wow. Hey thanks for the info.

What grade did you happen to purchase?

I'd love to own one, but, it looks like I'll spend close to a GRAND to get a Garand.

Hey, LD, take some pictures of the trigger group and post them and explain the details of a properly assembled group, that way those less in the know would be able to pull their groups and verify its assembled correctly.

Here is the trigger group. The smaller picture is the back side of a hammer spring housing (the one pictured is broken but you get the idea). This open side was facing outward and that is wrong.

The H&R was a service grade but I have bought a Springfield service grade and a CMP Special grade too. All were in absolutely excellent shape. Two had new stocks and the H&R had an original stock that was nearly excellent. Of course the Special grade was all redone with a new barrel.

Default CMP's Response....YEA!

Below is the response I got from CMP. Note it is from the CEO and he promises action.

LDBennett

"Mr. Bennett,

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. As you know from your past
purchases, this is not the norm for what we produce or ship. We will
identify the armorer who inspected this rifle and take corrective action as
appropriate.

Please accept my apologies for the hassle and my thanks for your support.

The disturbing thing is regardless that Obama and his administration are secretive, choose only the laws they want to use, get a Border Patrol officer killed (BATF allowing guns into Mexico), have increased our debt tremendously, has a socialistic agenda for the country (Progressive is socialistic!), lies incessantly about everything just to get re-elected, has saddled us with the most expensive healthcare system ever devised, wants income redistribution, and many more un-American things.... the polls have him leading any GOP candidate we might choose to run against him. Where are these people coming from? Are these the same 50% of the people that pay no taxes?

DARN!!!!

yep. Its the ones hes granted free and clear citizenship to and provides welfare to that continue to vote for him. All he wants is 2 terms, thats long enough to make himself rich and he'll be set the rest of his life. Clinton did it in the mid 90's and look at him now. Hes considered one of the richest presidents ever.

JLA:

While Obama will get richer (speaking fees after his presidency will see to that) I think riches are not his main goal. I believe he and the Progressive movement want to turn America into a socialist society like Europe. That worked out well, didn't it! Income redistributions, Environmental contorls, Government in our lives big time, are all part of that picture. Hillary would have done the same thing. The Democratic party is now firmly under the control of the left and is making moves towards Progressive issues. If we get Obama for a second term he will "fundamentally change America" as he promised, for the worst and we may never recover. At this point I am worried for my kids and grandkids!
