During our visit at the Pima Air and Space Museum today, we saw aircraft of all eras, all countries, all wars. There were several carrier models in Hangar One, so as to show the launching platforms for several of the aircraft shown. Here is my son in front of a model of an Old British carrier, an American Escort Carrier, and a Japanese submarine carrier - yes, if you look close, there is a seaplane on the deck in front of the conning tower.
![]() But no carrier based experience could leave out the biggest baddest carrier of them all...and even the Museum decided they should pay homage too.... GALACTICA!! ![]()

The baddest carrier ever? My dad would say the USS Fanshaw Bay, CVE-70. He was aboard her during the Battle off Samar (bosmar.com). The Fanny Bee garnered 2 Presidential Unit Citations (three, if you count the one from the President of the Phillipines) among other battle honors.

No competition, baddest carrier ever USS Enterprise (CV 6) of World War II fame.
Fought In the critical early days of the Pacific War to the bitter end.

Keep in mind that the only bombs that ever fell on the mainland of the US during WWII were launched from those Jap subs with seaplanes. They dropped a few little useless bombs in California but didn't break or kill anybody - they may have killed a cow or some grapes though.

Here are some of the opponents the Fanshaw Bay (among others) faced on October 25, 1944:

I respectfully disagree -- The two or three incidents in california were from submarine shelling not bombs -
The only "bombs" landing in the US were incindery (sp) devices carried by free flight balloons -- These landed in the pacific northwest causing forest fires -- Oh yes- I vote for the Yorktown -- CVA 10 -- Last edited by gunboat; 01-29-2013 at 08:40 PM.. |
