Default scope mount ?

Hi,
I just received a Lee Enfield #1 MK III SMLE .303 cal circa 1918. Rifle has
been modified with a Lyman peep sight and was tapped/drilled for scope.
I talked with owner to find out she did not know since it was her late husband's rifle. Any ideas what was attached to the receiver?

Looks like somebody tried to drill/tap for a side-mount scope. Badly.
