Uncertainty over access to the streets around WIN Stadium has forced organisers to make major changes to this week’s Anzac Day march.
Wollongong marchers this year will set off at 10am sharp from the southern end of Church St, rather than the showground next to the stadium as in past years. Wollongong RSL sub-branch president Peter Poulton said the decision to alter the route was made due to the risk of reduced access from ongoing work to the western grandstand roof. The roof was damaged during strong winds last September and heavy machinery and cranes have since been frequent visitors to Harbour St as part of rebuilding and repair work. Mr Poulton said those marching on Wednesday should now gather at Church St, south of Glebe St. ‘‘In Glebe St, we’ll have the vintage cars which carry the disabled veterans and they’ll go to the town hall,’’ he said. The procession will head north along Church St, turning east into Burelli St before finishing outside the Wollongong City Council administration building. ‘‘It’s a slightly shorter route which should help some of the people who aren’t able to walk as far any more,’’ Mr Poulton said. The altered route has been adopted for at least the next three years. This year’s march will be led by RAAF Group Captain Karon Millet, who will also deliver the commemoration address at Wollongong Town Hall. The Anzac Day salute will be taken by Vice-Admiral Peter Jones of the Royal Australian Navy. Preparations for Wednesday’s dawn service and commemoration service are running to schedule. ( not really of interest to the US folks but i know theres a few aussies on here who may not have caught the change )
