Default SR22 feedback?

I posted here a few days ago and wondered why no one responded, but after looking at the title it was obvious sorry for the error.

I know its been a few weeks but the bug to buy another new gun has struck me again! Okay, I'm this close to getting the SR22, that's why I'm asking if there are any glitches or problems that have cropped up since its introduction? Also what kind of price have those who have purchased the SR22 been paying? Just want to make sure I don't overpay... My whole reason for the SR22 is ammo! Its just too expensive to shoot my SR-40 and LCP 380 every weekend and run more than one or two mag's through them, I think the SR22 with low cost 22 ammo will allow me to keep up my good
training.

I have a Ruger SR22 that I bought about 4 months ago. I've run about 2000 rounds through it and I highly recommend this gun. One thing about .22 pistols is they're generally picky about ammo, usually requiring hot loads to really drive the slide back to work the action properly. The SR22 (mine anyway) has [I]very[I] little trouble feeding anything I put through it. Right down to Federal bulk or even Remington golden bullets. Even these notorious rounds rarely cause problems. An occasional fail to feed, I'm talking maybe a handful in 1500 rounds of the cheapest ammo available. The gun functions great, I love the centerfire feel, it's DA/SA, has a de-cocking safety, and takes down easily. Nice kit comes with it, with an extra grip and magazine extensions. Now, this isn't a super-accurate match pistol, the short barrel and light weight make that a challenge. Also the DA trigger pull is pretty heavy, I usually cock mine and SA it all the way. A great gun that I highly recommend.

Great to hear this from someone who's ran a few thousand rounds through it! One of the reasons it has been on my list is I have a SR-40 and this SR22 would allow me to shoot a lot more ammo without going broke. And as you said it will have a bit of the feel of a bigger gun.

Just bought mine last week from a local dealer, only paid $329. Once I saw the price I knew it was going to be in my hands, I have seen them for as high as $495. Ran about 200 rounds through it this weekend. Only suggestion is to wear safety glasses as my son got something in his eye and I did feel spray on my hand. Other than that I love it.

I have one and have yet to have any issues. It shoots really good for a 22 and most replicates the feel of a larger semi auto.

Here are the issues that I know of as of this date.

1. A number of pistols were shipped from the factory with loose barrel screws. Make sure your screw is securely tightened. The information in the manual lists the wrong size allen wrench. I believe the correct size is 9/64" . Going from memory on that one. If the barrel is loose even a few shots will cause the round, positioning pin to peen the bottom of the barrel. The screw is just in front of the trigger on the underside of the frame.

2. A number of pistols have had failures of the takedown lever. This is some type of plastic/polymer part that hinges on the right hand side of the frame. It is secured closed by an internal spring and plunger that fits in a detent on the left side of the frame. This part when pulled down allows the slide to move rearward so that the slide can be disengaged from the frame. This part also acts to stop rearward motion of the slide. The bottom of the muzzle recoil spring cup hits it with each shot. Apparently the front portion of the lever is collapsing into the spring chamber. When this happens the slide moves too far rearward, disengages from the frame and flies off the end of the muzzle and downrange. The P22 has a very similar takedown lever which also acts as the slide stop. It is solid and no failures of it have been noted.

3. The slide stop arm on the left side of the pistol is pressed against the underside of the slide after the last round is removed from the magazine. A number of owners have reported that the sharp, top edge that drags along the slide is shaving off metal. The solution here is to very lightly polish that edge with something like 1600 grit emery paper.

Many owners report having to give the mag a sharp tap to get it to seat and most report that the removable grip takes a really strong pull to remove it. Most everyone seems to like the fact that Ruger removed the "PISTOL" from the slide.

There is a recent report of one suffering some type of ammunition explosion that damaged the pistol and the shooter. Regular Remington ammunition was reported as what was being fired, which particular one has not been reported that I know of. Several reports have been made regarding rounds not chambering and being indented by the breech face.

From the posts I'm reading, most shooters really like the pistol and report minimal problems and most ammunition works fine in their pistol. Plenty of people are still wanting a threaded barrel. Those who own P22s and the SR22s generally report a preference for the SR22. I don't have one, have looked at one and intend to buy one as soon as Ruger gets the bugs out. My series 3 LCP has had none of the issues the early pistols had and has been flawless in nearly 3,000 rounds. M1911

Above is a picture of a damaged barrel. This was caused immediately by firing the pistol with a loose barrel screw.

Picture of broken take-down lever. The center portion of the lever, the part that stops the slide has broken away and continued firing lets the barrel move too far rearward where the slide rails disengage from the frame and then the recoil spring launches the slide downrange. Ruger is replacing these at no cost but several owner report the replacement part not lasting 100 rounds. Other shooter are having no problems.. Go figure.

I got one thing to add to potetial problems but Ruger has been really responsive in taking care of it. We have one on a range program that has probably gotten a thousand rounds through it already. The only issue we have had with this one and the SR22 we had on the program previously is broken firing pins. The orginal pins are very hard but also brittle. They break in the middle were the retaining pin resided. Ruger is very fast about sending new pins on thier dime and the new pins seem to be a little more forgiving. They are not ammo sensitive at all and are a great choice for someone looking for a 22 handgun with centerfire functions.

A little disappointing to hear of such issues from anything with the Ruger name on it.

Doubly so because I bought an SR22 last week. I'm very impressed so far. Before even shooting it I was thinking that a second one might well be on the wish list. Here's hoping I'm not disappointed over time.

(As for swapping the grips...the little buttons and recesses they fit into are on the sides of the grip near the top. If you grab the thing by the sides you are working against the program and will never get it off without damaging it. If on the other hand you grip it front and rear, it will actually flex slightly and lift the recesses off the little buttons and come right off. Unfortunately I don't think this technique is mentioned in the owner's manual.)
