As you will be able to tell, I am still learning reloading.
I have read the questions & answers concerning "crimping" I have also read the sticky, and have come to the conclusion that the Lee crimper die is the best way to go, will the Lee die work with my RCBS rock crusher ? I am loading 300 Savage. I have gleaned a mountain of knowledge from this forum, great place to hangout.

Yes the Lee Factory Crimp die will work in an RCBS Rock Chucker press.

I have had my Chucker for over 30 years and some times make the same slip up and call it a Crusher.

I crimp for all my Semi-autos and tube feed magazine rifles, but not for my bolt actions. I did, but not anymore. No real reason just quit doing it. Your Savage does not need to be crimped, you can load perfectly safe and accurate ammo with out without the crimp. It's entirely up to you.

All Model 99 Savages had rotary magazines until the guns made in the 1990's, I believe. A 1909 version most certainly has a rotary magazine. The later version (post 1990's) had a regular magazines like every other gun out there. Savage made a mistake in doing away with the rotary magazine. That rotary magazine was the feature Bill Ruger stole for his 10/22.
The Model 99 is one of the best kept secrets in gundom. They are very accurate, rugged, well made guns superb for hunting. The rotary mag has a number that appears on the the side of the gun telling you what remains in the mag. The ballistics of 300 Savage nearly match 308. Mine is from the 1950's. I bought it for a song off the original owner's son, a co-worker, after the father died. In developing loads for it with a chronograph, not taking too much effort to aim accurately, the accuracy astounded me for a lever operated gun. I think in general it beats out a Winchester 94 for accuracy. It most certainly is a unique gun with a modern look for the age of the design and 300 Savage is a very good round indeed. I can not take it to the range without an inquiry about it and an offer to buy it. And it is NOT for sale!!! LDBennett |

I use the Lee FCD in my Lyman Crusher press on my 300 Sav. loads that I shoot in my old Sav. 99 I just use a light crimp to get a good even neck tension on jacketed bullets. With cast loads I use the built in roll crimp on my Lyman bullet seater die.
