was out this morning after foxes as usual , was whistling up a couple when one came over a rise on the next hill, i'd plinked some targets there a while back and took a punt and actually nailed it ( more luck than class )
so i hoof on over and collect him and think no more until i get home while skinning it i saw the hole in the skull but the projectile was still in the skin /scalp it dropped out when i put the pelt on the board to scrape it knocked a hole in the skull and bounced off !! killed the fox outright .. i lasered up the next hill a while back and its almost dead on 340 meters or 370 yards i know if i tried it again it'd not work , just lucky it all came together

Way to go Jack. I am sitting here grinning from ear to ear as I think I know how you feel about that shot.

yes Beth , i do that a lot apparently
but like i said this time it was just dumb luck i've potted feral cats at the same distance and never nailed one i may have hit my plinking target a dozen times in hundreds of shots .. but it got the fox this morning Beth , his hide is in the tub now ![]() and in a week or two it'll be a a rather nice if a tad small pelt |

what i found hard to figure was the projectile not penetrating but hitting and then sliding down inside the hide .. never seen that before
i used to have old car doors as long range plinking targets as they made a great sound you could hear , but even at 400 if you hit the door it penetrated ( long time between If's) Last edited by jack404; 06-04-2012 at 08:52 PM.. |

Great shot. JLA would be proud of you. He is into long distance .22 shooting.
CCI mini-mags have a good punch and I like them. I went to my fire arms dealer to get more a month or so ago and all he had were CCI AR Tactical come in a bulk cardboard box of 375 rounds), which he said were replacing the mini-mags. They shoot OK. I did some comparisons between CCI Mini-Mag and the AR Tactical on this post... http://www.thefirearmsforum.com/show...ent#post899577 |

i'm blessed to have a goodly stock of mini mag for a while and i've a mountain of Olin ( Australian manufactured winchester ) that shoots ok too ( mainly plinking ) and some eley for when i need that
but the mini mags are great for bunnies foxes roo's and goats up to 150-200 depending on rifle .. i've a parker hale that will shoot CCI within 4" at 200 and been pulling 2" at 100 with the little lithgow with CCI, but thats got $500 of glass on it too not done a lot of 200 target with it yet , been too busy with foxes and bunnies , tis the season here ![]() |

Jack, foxes, bunnies and roos make more profitable targets than paper any day.

Awesome shot.
I once took a pot shot offhand with a Single-Six using one of the hot .22 LR rounds. My friend hunting with me saw him with the bino's just sitting in a crook. I said "watch this", and I drew, aimed for about a second, and shot him in the eye, I have always called that one my miracle shot, but now I'm officially retiring it from the "awesome shot" category, After your shot, mine is just another good shot. You are now officially "The Man"! Last edited by junior e; 06-09-2012 at 02:08 PM.. |

Mathew Quigly would be proud of you. the best I've done with my 10/22 and CCI mm's is ping pong balls at 75yds.
I am now out of them but I will have to restock and try for 200

Congrats on the long, long shot Jack!
Little shy of 400 yards.....heck of a LONG shot for the .22 caliber. We've been wackin spinner targets out to 250yds as of late (useing mil-dot scopes.) We finally got us a good "straight-line" distance of 600yds set up and plan to try out the .223's here in a couple'a days. With the 600 yard distance, we also have our targets set up 3/4th's up a 60 feet dirt bank and "plan" to see just how far the .22's (CCI Blazers) will actually reach on the, or out to the 600 yard targets. One of us spotti'n and the other shooting and switching back and forth. (just gotta know!) We plan to wait for a all but calm day. (should be able to see the dirt/dust kick up with the .22 hits) Great shooting Jack! I like hearing about those long range shots!

A while back i was at the rifle range with a buddy and we were haivng fun shooting some inline black powder guns. i had brought my kentucky long flintlock.. was using cotton(tshirt) patched lead balls, bore butter as a lube, and pyrodex as a charge. as we were leaving I wanted to get the last charge out of the flintlock. my buddy was holding it and noticed a guy with an ar type rifle shooting at a water jug out at the end of the range. somewehere around 120yds. he's been there for an hour trying to site the ar in. had optics all over it. big eye strain relief stuff. optice must have cost more than the gun. so my buddy asks the guy if we can shoot at his target.. he smirks and waves his hand. so my buddy, stands there in a 'wrong stance' gun bbl swing to and from a bit, and he kracks off the shot with the usualy puff of smoke from a BP gun. when the smoke cleared.. the milk jug was swinging and bleeding water.. 120 yard non bench rested, iron sight, patched lead ball and all.. was a luck shot.. bt the ar guy grabbed his stuff and tossed it into his range bag and left with a disatisfied look.. ![]() Last edited by soundguy; 06-18-2012 at 08:26 AM.. |
