Is it possible, 165 gn @4200 fps.?

I bought a used Weatherby Vanguard 300 Mag with a couple partial boxes of Wby.ammo. I took it out to sight in with a box of 10 w/ 165 gn. spire points and my Comp.Electronics Chrony. The first 5 shots registered: 4077,4040,3267,4219 and 4232 fps. I thought maybe the chrony was off or they were reloaded with maybe 110 gn bullets, but the primers all had the Wby. green sealer on them. I decided not to continue using them and switched to Wby.180 gn spire points which registered just over/under 3200fps. Also shot some 41 Mags which registered normally. There were no signs of excess pressure on the brass or on extraction. Pulled the other 5 bullets and the pills were 165 gn. The powder measured 87.8 gns in all 5 pulls. So would those speeds be possible with 165 gn bullets?

Sounds too high.

Was your Chrony at least 15 feet from the muzzle? Otherwise, or even so, muzzle blast may have given erroneous readings.

Chrony was probably 12-15' away.

yeah somethins not jivin. BAck the chrony up to 20 or 25 feet. the .300 wby has significant muzzle blast compared to the others.

OK, thanks for replies. Don't know what powder was in them, but 87.8 gn seems like a lot, but the 4000+ fps would be unreal.

87ish is about right for 165 gr .300 wby loads.

I would infer that the bullet is tripping the first sensor. Then the muzzle blast trips it again. Then the bullet trips the second sensor; and you end up with the erratic, too fast readings that you reported.
