There's a skunk ( or more ) tearing open, and contaminating the horse
feed in my barn .... I can tell by the aroma . From time to time I get 'possums or 'coons playing that game and I've had no trouble catching them in my live-trap . These "guys" aren't reacting to the bait I normally use . Got any ideas on what I should be using ? The food they're ruining is to expensive for this to go on any length time .

Canned fish flavor cat food, bread crusts smeared with peanut butter, apples.
You may try covering the back half of the trap with an old blanket and place the bait under there. |

But once it is trapped, what do you do then. Shoot it from a good distance?

Put the trap in a trash bag and tape it to the tail pipe of a car and let it run for twenty minutes.

We put our fish guts, bones, skin, etc. in an old box outside the cabin door, beside the porch. Every evening around 5:00 we would have a couple of skunk visitors. One evening someone stomped up the steps, banged on the door to let us know he would be taking one of the boats out the next day. Dad very carefully opened the door, whispered Shhhhh and pointed over the side of the porch. The man looked over, and instant silence reigned as he very carefully and quietly went away.

JH, to my surprise, I find myself absolutely wrong thinking this thread wouldn't get more than three replies. Seems to be a number of folks with skunk experience. VG.

They wont spray if they dont see anything. Meaning, just cover it up with a blanket completely before moving the trap. Also, supposedly(according to mythbusters anyway, take it for what it is worth) they can only spray about every 10 days or so. So if they have recently sprayed something, they may not have enough juice. That's a big if to take a chance with though....

When I worked animal control, canned cat food was what I used in the majority of live traps.

If you really want to bait a skunk, try some extra sinky geds68. I hear it's paralyzing to many animals once they come upon it.

It doesn't seem to paralyze finger tho......but it does seem to slow down cognitive and reasoning abilities!
