Default I got one for ya

Here is a good one. From what I was told, this company only made air guns until they branched out and made this 22 pistol. Is anyone familiar with it and does anyone know an approx value? I might want to sell it if its worth anything.
I know it needs cleaning up.

Seems to be called a "Knockabout", was produced from 1953-1960 and sold for $17.95. I saw one sold online for $65.

That's all I have to say about that.

I wasnt hoping for much. Its not a highly desirable item or anything. Just thought maybe it was rare or something. I never saw one before.

Thats not bad. Probably in better shape than mine. Oh well, I took it in for payment for doing a gun transfer that I normally charge 15.00 for.

They are a fun little gun, and the name Knocabout fits quite well. Just a neat plinker for the pocket when hiking or camping. You can shoot all day for a few dollars.

During the late 1940's and all through the 1950's, there was a huge demand for all kinds of consumer products that people had not been able to afford during the Depression or find during WWII. Target pistols were one of them, and a variety of companies and individuals tried making inexpensive single-shot 22 pistols, often using then-new technologies like castings, stampings, or injection molded plastic.

Your Sheridan "Knockabout" shows all three. As a minimum field gun for a minium price, they were no bad thing, and were about the best engineered of the type. Donald Simmons wrote an excellent article about this class of gun for Gun Digest Annual back in the 1970's or 1980's, but I don't know the year, and my books are packed away at the moment.

This category did not last long, I think for two reasons: A), with increasing prosperity, people could afford revolvers or semi-autos, and B) the practice of giving youngsters real firearms to hunt and plink with began to fade rapidly, as the US became increasingly "suburbanized".

At gun shows, I have seen people ask $200+ for really nice specimens of the Sheridan, but I don't know what they actually get. There may be more interest in them where I live, because they were a local product.

PS - thanks for putting up excellent photographs!

Yes Dan,
Not a collectors arm with huge $$$$$$$$
but rare in it's own way.
I would hang it near/on a kangaroo hide if I had one........
and KEEP it, if for no other reason than nostalgia.
They are not worth much in dollars, but you still don't see many.

I think you should keep it and shoot it. It can only go up in value. I have never seen one but I like it.

The actual trade name was spelled "Knocabout" without the second "k".

Now that is one that I hadn't heard of before. Neat little thing!
Even if it's not worth a whole lot of cash I wou;dn't mind having one for the collection since I'm rather partial to the old Sheridan air rifles.

There is a nice one up on one of the gun auction websites. The seller has spelled the name correctly (thanks Jim K!) but wants $250 plus shipping for it. No box.

Daisy also made a .22 rifle to fire caseless ammo; the rifles are very scarce, but the ammo is fairly common and often seen at gun shows. It was ignited by hot air, and the rumor at the time was that it was pulled from the market because ammo anywhere near Washington, DC, ignited spontaneously.
