Gun Stocks

I have a Remington 1100 that I have killed a lot of game with thru the years, but the gun doesn't fit me. When I shoulder the gun I'm seeing the entire rib on the barrel, and the front bead is 3" higher than the receiver. Where do I look for a new stock that has more drop, or is this one of those things that I need a smith to measure, and fix.

Whats the stock look like now, is it a field or trap comb?

Might need to go to an European style.

How do I tell the difference? All I know is that it is too high for me.

Pick one. Too high means the comb is too high, so you do not need an adjustable. You need as flat as you can or your but is too low into the shoulder.

It's the original stock. Here is a picture of the gun.

Try this, put the bottom point of the but in your collar cone & see if the beeds stack.

If that works you need to add an adjustable but.

Nope! I still see the length of the barrel, front bead higher than the receiver.

This gun came with a 30" full choke barrel, it's a Ducks Unlimited edition, that I won in a raffle. I bought a new 28" barrel for it that has the Remchokes, so I had the 30" full cut down to 18 1/2". It doesn't matter which barrel I have on the gun, I still have to move my face foward on the stock to get the right sight picture.

Thanks! It's looking like I might have to go find a good shotgun smith. The best one I ever knew, and the only one for that matter, is no longer with us.

You could drop it yourself Myles. Rem 1100 stocks are a dime a dozen, so if ya muck it up its nuttn to get a used one online.

Just go down to your local walmarts and grab a good sander if you dont already have one. start course and rough it out. Im bettn you need a 1/4 to a 1/2 inch more drop, spend a day gettn the fit just about right. leave it a tad high and bring it down as you finish with progressively finer grits. then hit it with Tru oil or BLO.

I know you know how to work wood 'CARVER' Ive seen those sweet walkin sticks.

Thanks Josh! Since Remington stocks are a dime a dozen, where would I look to find another one that has more drop?

I'll be in Ft Worth on the 2nd of July, one day only most probably. DIL will be delivering my 2nd grandson!

I got rid of an 1100 years back, same reason; didn't fit. For some crazy reason, I use and old beratta A2, 2 3/4; luv that shotgun.

Myles, not to get off the subject (I don't know the answer) but I have that exact same coffee table in my living room.

When I want a new stock, I start with Boyd's Gun Stocks.

I'll check em out! Does the coffee table you have raise up? I kinda got my finger over the lense a little, the table is designed so that the top will lift up, and move towards you, if it's turned right. Allows you to eat off it while sitting on the couch.

I stopped looking at Boyds once I got up to $300 for a new stock, and there was more money to be added to get the stock that would match my fore end!

You're in a good position to fix the stock yourself, as it's easier to remove wood than to add it. I've done a couple over the years using a 6" X 48" stationary belt sander with the owner standing next to me. Simply sand the comb down until the fit is right and then finish accordingly. Pure custom fit!

This is a Duck's Unlimited gun with all the checkering, and scroll work that you would expect to find on it. I can't just do part of the stock, I have to do it all, and i'm more than a little worried about the checkering. Also it must match the fore end, where there is more checkering! I've made stocks from scratch for guns that didn't require any thing but a basic stock, and they turned out well, but I had to do the fore end also, just to make them match!

You shouldnt get into the checkering Myles. youre only gonna take some height off the comb. Once you get that part right then you sand down the rest of the stock just enough to refinish it. Most likely its a hardwood stock with a walnut stain. and if you do want the checkering to be sharp just pick up a checkering tool from midway and take the time to painstakingly go over the checkering with it to sharpen it up. checkering is already there so all youd be doing is chasing it with the sharp tool. after final sanding and first coat of finish of course. then once its all back sharp finish er up.

Oh BTW.. Custom fit stocks are not mass produced for any shotgun. Custom fit stocks are exactly that. custom fit to the shooter by a stock maker, gunsmith, or a gun savvy wood worker. I think you more than fit 2 of the 3 myles.
