Putin visits Israel amidst regional turmoil
Russian president Vladimir Putin arrived in Israel on Monday for the start of a brief visit to the region, his first since returning to the presidency earlier this year. Putin will hold extensive meetings with Israeli officials to discuss regional issues, but also make some public appearances, most notably to help dedicate a monument in Netanya to the Red Army for its victory over Nazi Germany in WWII, in the presence of a large number of Red Army veterans who now live in Israel. In the evening he will sit down for a state dinner with President Shimon Peres. Analysts have speculated about the timing of the visit and the symbolism of the event in Netanya, being as it is a very public demonstration of what ties Russia and Israel together amidst a regional tidal wave of Islamist political victories and other issues which Russia and the Jewish State share concerns about. However, differences on Iran, Syria and relations with the US are also likely to be high on the agenda during Monday's meetings.
