Berrys bullets

Just bought 1000 40 s&w 155gr RS( round shoulder) bullets from berrys. I think I read on the website not recommended to load at higher velocities. If anyone has used these bullets before I am asking for advice and for any recipes you may use for these type bullets. Im just going to load them for target practice so I wont have to play around with different type powders. Because my Dad is a federal agent and firearms instructor in mobile alabama. He gives me all the Federal and Winchester ranger hollow points that I want. Im trying to save them and only use them when carring concealed. Oh yeah I will shooting these berrys bullets out of a glock 23 gen3.

Plated bullets occupy a position between cast bullets and jacketed bullets. They are soft lead, but have a hard outer shell on them. When loading plated bullets we have found best results using low- to mid-range jacketed data in the load manual. You must use data for a bullet that has the same weight and profile as the one you are loading. Do not exceed mid-range loads. Do not use magnum loads.


Currently published load data is limited to some calibers by Accurate, Western Powders and Hodgdon. We are working with these companies to get data published for all of our bullets.

We recommend using hard cast load data or start with mid-range jacketed data. Make sure data is below 1200fps unless you are using a Thick-Plated bullet that we list a higher max velocity for like the 9mm 124gr HBRN-TP that can be shot to 1500fps in open class guns like a .38 Super. Keep in mind that since our plated bullet has the same pressure curve as a hard cast bullet, the published cast data will be very close to what you will get with our plated bullets. If you use Jacketed data with our plated bullets you can get from 5% - 8% increase in velocity using that data.

Other than the data from Western and Accurate for the 9mm and .40S&W there is no printed data available.

I have loaded and shot a bunch of Berry's bullets. I like them a lot, the price is right, customer service is top notch and the quality is excellent.

.40S&W out of a Glock 23:
Berry's Hollow Point or Flat Nose plated bullet, 180 Grains
5.0 Grains of Hodgdon Universal
Small Pistol Primer, I use whatever brand is available.

The load is snappy, but not too snappy. I'm seeing about 950fps. I'm a lousy shot with a pistol, so I won't mention accuracy. I will say accuracy is as good as it normally is.

I've been using a lot of Berry products and have loaded 155 gr plated fn for my 40 xd without a single problem. Just range plinking stuff. I think the velocity caution is 1200 fps and I've never even com close to that with light-medium loads. My Lee manual has load data for Vihtavouri and Accurate powder loads with this bullet. The Lapua web site has free load data for VV powders and this bullet.

I'd recommend taking a look here www.precisiondelta.com or www.rozedist.com and buy yourself regular jacketed bullets and forget all the "special" loading characteristics required for plated bullets. I know I'm the minority around here but with all the reduced load, "do not exceed" high maintenance BS required by Berrys, I see no logic using their products when either of the aforementioned JACKETED bullet retailers listed above are priced the same. But then

Graf and Sons. Berrys 9mm 115 ball - 75.59 a thousand
Precision - 9mm 115 ball - 82.00 a thousand. Hmmm. That's a little more - about 9%.
Roze - 9mm 115 ball - 101.40 a thousand. Hmmmmm. That's 30% more.

I guess they're not all "the same price".

If we're going to get technical Alpo make sure you add Grafs handling charge which brings the price of the Berrys 45ACP 230gr ball to $135.74 AND the margin of the Berrys 115's compared to Precision Delta to 1.005641% difference. So you've got me on the Zero 115's that's a tad high, however 75% of the examples you provided prove the original point, Berrys prices are rediculous! Hey we all get to choose, but thanks for proving my point.

As to the OPs question, I've used Berry's plated (but prefer jacketed). As noted earlier, load them using data for lead or at least keep the loads in the mid-range and below if you try to use jacketed data. FWIW, I stay with slower powders for the 40. I especially like WSF and Power Pistol, but nothing wrong with the old standby: Unique.

If you want to try Berry's try them. If you don't, don't.

Berry's website says load to mid-range jacketed levels of same size and configuration jacketed bullets, not to exceed 1250 fps.

I shoot Berry's bullets in probably 95% of my reloads and have never had a problem firing them in anything!
