out this morning chasing foxes i came across a good sized herd red deer with a big boss male but still only youngish standing tall with a glorious winter coat on im , so i came home grabbed the rifle ( i only had my .22 lr with me) and head back out and sure enough they are down by the water by now ,
( i've not seen red deer in this area before , a few hundred k's was how far i had to go to chase them , so never did ) i take the shot , nail him , and as i'm looking him over before field dressing i see how thick his neck is , its thicker than i am front to back .. so i pull out my NAA Mini and put one through where i'd cut straight through and exit!!! , about put a screw driver handle in a inch or two !!! nasty nasty little round them , never under estimate them suprised me looks like when it hit the vertebrae, the bones just distorted the projectile its carried on but tumbling and the bones become shrapnel ..

sounds interesting. I'll have to look into them. wouldn't hurt to have a small center fire in the safe
how does it compare to a .22-250 or a .220 swift? balistics aside, I can look them up in my tables. I'm curios about knock down kill ability.

I sometimes carry the NAA in .22WMR as a BUG, when I want something lighter in my pocket than a .38. A lot of deer have been killed with the .22WMR thru the years. It is now illegal in LA, but that wasn't always the case. The laws changed back in 78, or 79, when they added the word "centerfire" to the law. Before then it was legal to hunt deer with the .22WMR. The video attached shows 14" of penetration, in home made ballistic gel, after passing thru several layers of denim. Firearm used is the NAA with a 1" barrel. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUFwQnoXjps

From a rifle I wouldn't have been to surprised, but an 1 1/4" barrel? WOW indeed.

I love my NAA PUG, it lives in my cargo pocket as a small BUG. .22 mag ain't no slouch for sure, even out of a short barrel. The only issue is hitting anything with it.
.22 LR has been used to take many a deer also, just gotta have good shot placement. impressive, better performance than I would have expected from these little guys!

Don't shoot the deer. There isn't enough of them. Besides they can't shoot back. Shoot a Zombie instead.

Nice shooti'n Jack for sure!
People can under-estimate the .22 WMR (and the barrel length as well). I've got a few reg. .22lr revolvers with "short" barrels on them that will REACH out there. 250-300yds. is a long ways for a 3" .22lr., 9 shot H&R on a pop can. But the one I have will out-shoot a few others with longer barrels every time.

Rhuga , i'm a meat eater , so is my family , the neighbour the egg guy and the pork butcher and they all got a bit outta the critter and the hides in the tub soaking in the mix
no waste .. and i get venison , egg's pork and cash as a byproduct what would killing a zombie get me besides one less political applicant ?? Zane i was just wondering what the mini would do and figured it was as thick as i am so did it i was gonna cut there anyway so could follow the round in and recover it or so i thought it went straight through .. ![]() Last edited by jack404; 07-14-2012 at 07:58 AM.. |

Here's a nightmare for you, I went out and mowed the lawn today. Those poor blades of "living" grass, slaughtered. Wait, before legalized hunting in the US, the deer heards, and flocks of turkeys were almost wiped out. Now they have prospered to the extent many states are extending their seasons. I'll make you a bet. I'll bet Jack has done more to enhance those deer heards in his country than you have in yours. Then again, that's just my opinion. ![]()

Also, congrats on the hunt Jack. Yep, would not want to get hit with a .22WMR. I've seen many a ground hog cease and desist immediatly and even though that was with long gun, wouldn't want to get hit with one out of any gun. We had a lady over here do in a bad guy with a reg .22 LR out of the little freedom arms gun.

First, I am not an Anti-Hunter. Second, I believe that this is everyone's choice who can afford it and do it legally. Third, I gave up hunting years ago, when I added up the cost to do the critter hunt, and that the price per pound far exceeded what it would cost to get a steak or or other cut at the store. Besides, when I went to the store this helped somebody get a job in the industry! Lastly, If my family were starving then hunting would be a different story. But, I do not remember venison being all that good anyway.
I don't need the "sport" of killing something that has been tracked and is standing there looking at me. I am now shooting them with a camera so someone else gets a chance to see them. Even to go fishing has became to expensive for me and that I loved. Spending the day with a fly rod and hand tied flies that I would make is far more satisfying for me. This is just my choice. Well, If I remember correctly, Red Deer are an invasive species down south. It is either hunt them or butcher them for dog food.

sorry here they are feral ( introduced non native invasive species )
personally i'd like to see all deer gone as they dont belong here , all cats too they are doing a lot of damage to our land and environment , we dont have cloven hooved critters here , only ferals have hooves , hooves cut up our soils and create erosion and why farmers plant grass that will help stabilize the soils ( spell checker is demanding i spell US style again for stabilise we dont use Z but i better to avoid this being ignored ) but this costs and we cant do it outside their farms so.. next will be a complaint about the 50,000 cats we hope to kill a month here now we have gotten access to 4.4 million acres of hunting lands here for the public that will save 6 native critters a day per cat we kill but folks dont care about that only about poor kitty , we'll poor kitty is wiping out our fauna .. so tough cookies folks no-one every says " hey jack why dont you shoot the roo's around your place " and so i cant get to answer because they aint a plague here , but are elsewhere so i go there to take roo's not here where the numbers are ok know why ?? folks only care about what upsets em and many dont give a hoot in reality its just a way that they make themselves better than you so i normally respond in a set way but this aint here so i'll just keep on huntin |

Hey Jack, You folks still having trouble with the rabbits? Australia has had it's share of animals being introduced that don't belong there and sense there appears to be no natural predators to keep the numbers in balance you have no other choice that to put them down. Going to take lots of bullets and nets.

some idiot way back started a germ warfare thing on rabbits here myxomitosis was first but they adapted after a few generations
then they released the rabbit calicivirus , that knocked a lot down but it too is being adapted here there aint so many bunnies as yet but other area's well i posted pic's before 10,000 bunnies per hectare ( or 2.2 acres ) enough to eat every bit of grass and the roots leaving a dustbowl that lasts a decade until it recovers but then again i'm a animal murdering SOB and a wild eyed racist so i dont get much worse eh cats and foxes help keep the bunnies down a bit but we gotta remove them too once in ferals are awful hard to remove , sorta like illegal immigrants when socialists are in charge |

Jack, we have the same problems with invasive species, out west here it is horses and donkeys ( Burros ). They are simply getting out of hand, no one wants to destroy them, simply to keep them down to manageable levels. They have gotten so out of hand that they are destroying the land and water holes.. But the Bambi lovers who have never stepped foot out here scream in grief and anguish at the very through of corralling them and culling out the sick , weak and lame. Now cats here in the area I live, no problem, they are called Coyote chips. Little dogs are fairly safe because most of the time they are behind fences ( except from owls and hawks ). I have seen a yote walking down the street as if he owned it
And believe it or not, even if it is illegal, people will feed them and other wild animals such as Javelinas. Go figure
