Lashing, I'd get. Caning - that would make sense. Flogging, whipping, spanking, anything of that nature. At least he certainly seems to be talking about corporal punishment. But - "lacing"?

lacing is right , remember old boot laces double them over and tie them through the end hole of a ruler ( the rulers here had a hole in the end to hand them from a peg ) and made a nasty little whip the boot lace end would cut the skin ..
