It depends on which one of my carry guns I'm carrying. I have a Sig P-220 that I carried for a long time. It will shoot accurately to 50 yards. But I rarely carry that gun now because it's too heavy. My XDm .40 is good to about 25-30 yards. I have the 3.8 barrel which cuts down on the distance it will shoot.
I have a S&W 629 with a 8 3/8" barrel that has a lot more range than my carry guns and I do carry it for woods protection sometimes. But I don't think that's what you were asking about. The longer the barrel the longer the distance the gun will shoot of course. |

Normally I practice to 30 yards at my little range. But when I get the chance to shoot at 50 and out to 100 yards for fun. I got invited to shoot with local LEO this spring at the little department private range. We both shot the standard ranges then he broke out his suppressed m4 SWAT rifle and was shooting it as a demostration pretty impressive. But when he switched to the 100 yard steel traget he missed several times. I asked if I could shoot at it with my glock 17. Hit it first shot. He was shocked. Im not sure if a 9mm at 100 yards can do much damage but odds are I will hit.

9mm, 124-grain at 100 yards will drop 4", still have a velocity of 1021 fps and 287 foot pounds of energy. Trust me, it will hurt him.
