Well I did it. I bought an RIA .45 1911 hi cap (14 rds). It feels much thinner in the hand than I expected, but the grips are unusually thin.
Which brings me to my question/problem. I hate plastic grips. The problem is the grips aren't flat on the back. I had thought the entire frame would be wider but it isn't...only around the mag well. So I've been scouring the internet for someone who makes custom (preferably wood) grips for these. Now Para P14 magazines work in this pistol, so I thought maybe the frames on the Para might have the same step down from the mag well, but on a forum I visited someone said there is a slight difference in the grip screw spacing. I thought of just buying a standard pair of grips then cutting a step in the back, but I'm afraid I'll screw them up making them so thin. Anyone have any suggestions?

Glad to see that you bought one of those. I've been thinking of buying one too since I like the hi-cap 45's and have a pile of goodies for series 70 1911's.
I hope you like it. I've had a P12 since the second year they were made, early 90's??, I forget. It's been a great "little gun", my carry gun most of the time. I hated the plastic grips also, replaced them with Hogue wrap around finger grips when I brought it home. I'll see if I can find out what grips work on the RIA...I'll be wanting something else too if I buy one. Hey! Where's the pics of YOUR new gun???

That was the original plan but I think he just does standard 1911 grips.

I've been surfing and all that I keep finding about the grips is "grips from the Para P-14 will fit with minor modification".

Thanks gunhugger. I wonder what the minor modification is. According to the "experts" on one forum's older post on the subject, the Para grip screw spacing is slightly different than the RIA's. That's the first time I've heard of any deviation from one brand to another, but these guys sounded like the knew what they were talking about. I'll have to call one of the custom grip makers that make Para grips and ask.

Para special run for our unit about 5 years ago; got all the fixin's on her, about $1500 worth but only paid $700 cash NIB. Night sights, the works including 5 x 14 rd mags. Shoots pretty good but won't touch my S.A. for function or quality IMO. I have short fingers so the grip is about maxed out for me; slim grips might be in my future although I want to keep it stock for the most part.

Yes it is! But I use a standard 7, or 8rd mag when carring. Of course there's two more mags on the left hip!

Looks like the old school WWI pistol they used to go up with before they started mounting machine guns on planes.
