Any Geocachers here? - The Firearms Forum

Let me start out for those that have no clue what a geocache is.

Geocaching is a sport that uses Multibillion dollar Government technology to find $1.98 tupperware in the woods.

A cache can be from the size of your thumbnail to a 5gal bucket. You use a GPS, phone, tablet or what ever you want to locate the coordinates.

These are all over the world and it all started with the Lustrous Bill Clinton opened the GPS sats to civilian use. Everything is done so that it is family friendly (No porn, or other stuff like that is allowed in a cache). If it is not ok for a 6 year old then it is not allowed in a cache.

Geocaching in 2 minutes. This is a good watch.

We go through spurts and will go months with out doing it then we will kick off a huge run of caches.

My wife and I were introduced to it last Christmas. We found some last winter but haven't had a chance to do much this summer. We try to do only multi-caches or very unusual ones. Finding a film can under a lamp post got old quick. We use it to go on hikes and see areas around us that we wouldn't normally go to. It's just another excuse to get out of the house.

My wife uses her smart phone and I just use the car's garmin so we kinda compete to find it. So far we are about 50/50.

Haven't placed any yet. Figure we are too green. Maybe someday.

I had 25 placements but 4 have been destroyed, or lost. I need to get out and fix and repair a bunch of mine to get them back up to specs. Some jerk took my one ammo box and nailed our cache to a tree. I hate that people will do that.

I am all about unique cache containers. I have a branch in the woods, a 25# grainite rock, I had one that was a pill fob up in a tree about 40' tied to spider wire fishing line and ran down to the base of the tree and camoed so you had to unwind the fishing line get the cache and wind it back up into the tree it was so cool. Then I took some PVC with fitting and a 1/2 turn valve and stuck it between some bushes. That one got taken with they built a Buffalo Wild Wings.

My kids and I do it, but not with any measure of regularity. In fact, we still have TBs from CA to drop and we moved to VA in Oct '10........bad geocachers, bad.........

Bad I had someone like that. Took one of our TB and kept it for 3 years. I must have sent 20 emails asking them to drop it so that it can move.

What part of VA are you in? I am in OBX till tomorrow and then we are headed home. Drop them in a cache around 95 and let me know and we will pick them up and move them north.

I haven't been geocaching for a few years. I came up with some pretty unique cashes, that were way up there as far as difficulty.

I came up with one called TrigGig. It involved three different caches. When you found the first one it gave you a clue to the corrdinates of a second one, and after finding that one you got another clue for the final cache. You then had to take the info found in the first two cashes and calculate the corrdinates of the final cache using trig. I kept it going for two years, and only two people foound it. The prize was a $20 bill.

i have a micro that is attached to a 20# granite rock that is placed on a bank that is nothing but granite.

Yep, cacher here. Been at it since '03 but took a year or so off to build a house. When we are home, we try to get out a couple of times a month but when we go south for the winter, we really get at it.

I am in Central Va, between Charlottesville and JerryFalwellville. My sister is visiting this week (from SoCal) with one of her daughters, and I took them last year.........might just do some caching this week and drop some TBs.
