I have a m1 and an sks and I want to deer and hog hunt with one of them. Opinions? I'm in central Florida where the deer are small and most shots are under 50 yards.

All across rural Alaska, locals use old military guns for subsistence hunting. Reason is they are cheap. Many a moose, caribou, and bear have brought fresh meat back to the cache; killed with old military guns. The latest gun to hit Ak is the MOsin Nageant, they sell for $107 and people leave them in cabins; not worried about theft at that price.

50 to 100 yds on Florida size deer would be ok for the M1 IMO, I wouldn't use it on the hogs though they have a tougher hide and bone structure.

I'd say the 7.62x39 loaded with JSP bullets. Range should be no problem.

The 7.62x39 is much more powerful than the pistol size M-1 carbine cartridge. I would not hesitate to use the SKS. In fact I do use SKS for hogs

the m1 carbine is not the ticket.762x39 has almost the same ballistics as the 30-30 winchester and that has taken more deer and hogs than any thing up to date. old semperfi

Sks gets my vote too for hogs. Either for the deer.

the sks is a better choice for hunting.Ive hog hunted my whole life and have mixed opinions.I have killed em with a single .22 shot and couldnt put em down with 5 buckshot rounds.I have killed more with a knife than gun.We use to hunt with dogs and once a catch dog grabs you can grab the hind legs and throw em on the ground.best shot for a hog is right below the ear. This is the softest spot besides quartering shot behind the front shoulder.

7.62x39mm is my vote. Never cared for the .30 carbine ballistically speaking.

oh yeah, the garand will certainly do the job on just about anything on this continent!
gotta love the '06. In states where you have a 3 round limit or whatever, you'd have to get a 2-round clip to legally hunt with it. Here in WA, 8 rounds is legal though, don't know about other places. M1 carbine is a fun gun but as far as power is concerned, not so much... SKS has a huge advantage in the caliber department.
