44/357 mag Accurate #7 or #9? - The Firearms Forum

Howdy all. Just got some #9, and with a fun show coming up, I was wondering how # 7 & 9 compared in actual use. Been looking through the forum, and haven't found anything, so I figured I'd ask. Revolvers are S.A., and are a Ruger New Model 6" Blackhawk; Ruger New Model 6" Super Blackhawk; and an Interarms 8 & 3/8" SS Virginian Dragoon (pix posted in the reloading bench thread on pg 13). Preferred bullet is a 240gr JHP (not a SJHP) for 44, and a 125gr JHP for the 357 - both Hornady XTP's. I'm also open to any other load, as well.

I can't speak for the .44mag since I don't load for it. A friend of mine does use AA#9 in the .41Mag though to push 210gr jacketed bullets for a deer load.

AA#9 was my favorite slow-burner for heavy .357mag loads. I never loaded it behind 125gr bullets though, just 158, 170, & 180gr.

I've never used #7.

Not much info but hope it helps. Maybe others are using stuff closer to your chosen combo.

most important question is, what is your intended use for the loads? do you want heavy hitting loads or lighter plinking loads?

The 240 gr .44s will work better with #9, but the 125 gr .357s might be better off with #7.

I've used #9 for .357 158 gr JHP with good results. No experience loading .44 mag.

Wolleyworm, I want to use 240gr JHP for a backup when in the woods, so I need a good stiff hunting load for just in case. Same for the 357 with 125 gr JHP's for a backup for the backup.

Hornady XTP's in both. Maybe for the dreaded zombie outbreak, too.

I too use the 240 gr XTP in my .44s, but i shoot them in a Levergun with a 20" barrel and my powder of choice is 24 gr Lil Gun. gives 1850 FPS.

ANd my .357 loads are shot thru my 586 DCM 6" barrel and are loaded with 16 gr 2400 for a hair over 1500 fps.

The last .357 I loaded was with 11.0 grains of AA#7 behind a 125 grain HP bullet. Used in both a Dan Wesson revolver and a 94AE Winchester rifle.

I use H110 in my .44 magnum loads, lately I've been putting 22.1 grains behind a 240 grain bullet. It has a helluva recoil in the Ruger Redhawk but is needed to cycle the Ruger Carbine.
