Default Found an old Remington rifle but no idea what kind it is.help?

Any knowledge about the rifle would be awesome.

Its a Rem Rolling Block, fine rifles. can you provide the serial number and we can narrow down a date for you.

Unfortunately I can't make it out, there are several dates from the 1800s, newest date is sept 9th 1873 earliest is may 3 1804 if that means anything

The octagon section of the barrel just behind the rear sight points to it being an Argentinian M1879 in .43 Spanish. It should be marked as such on the top flat. THey ordered around 75,000 of these from Remington.

Welcome to TFF.

Over a million Remington rolling block military rifles were made ca. 1867-1888, starting with conversions of Civil War muslets.

In addition to U.S. use, examples were adopted by more than a half-dozen foreign countries, and a chamber cast will often be required to determine the particular cartridge they use.
