Default Springfield GI .45

Took a look on the SAI site and didn't see it, so figured I'd ask. Has Springfield discontinued or suspended production of their GI M1911A1? If so, does anyone know why? Just curious.

The one I had in mind was the plain pipe-rack model, one notch below the Mil-Spec, with vertical slide serrations and rounded front sight blade. I've had one for several years - it resides in my safe along with an Ithaca M1911A1, Colt MkIV Series 70 Government, Remington 1911R1, and a Norinco M1911A1 that was just too good a deal to pass up. I was bringing my insurance files up to date, checked on the Springfield site to see what they were selling for, and the straight GI version seemed to be out of the lineup. I was just wondering why, that's all, but thanks for taking the trouble to post the link.

They discontinued it almost a year ago. I thought it was a pretty good seller. I think it's because the price point is about $100 less than the Mil-Spec and they probably couldn't make much money on it.

Interesting, I'd kinda figured the straight GI model would've been one of their best sellers. Thanks for the info.

Have full size National Match. Springfield saved me hundreds of dollars and produces groups that cost hundreds more with another brand. I'm not talking custom here, just out of the box. Best over the counter buy .45 I have ever owned.

I've always wanted the GI model. Have they really discontinued them? I always thought that it was hot selling model. Then again, many forums I've been to told people to buy the mil-spec. Their logic was for 100 dollars more you could have an updated gun; so perhaps some of potential buyers were lost.

Maybe they got too much competition from RIA. Springfield was dipping into that den of the market.

Who knows.

Either way I really wanted a no-frills 1911 from a reputable company.

It's a shame that Springfield has stop producing them.

Far as I have found, Springfield Armory discontinued it. I think the reason the Mil-Spec is recommended more is because of the better sights. The GI model I'm pretty sure didn't come with a lowered & flared ejection port either. The RIA I had, had the lowered & flared port, but not the dot sights.

I've been dancing with the idea of buying an RIA. I hear their 1911s do fairly well, provided you use quality magazine. I'm not sure of their durability though.
