best bet is always to clean , from there you can see if things are jamming up or theres junk stopping things happening

much easier to see issues when its clean

...especially the Marlin 60 Beth, they get dirty fast and need a good cleaning after a couple hundred rounds or so. Just depends on what ammo you are useing and how dirty the ammo shoots.
The Winshester ammo (lead bullets) in my Marlin will REALLY make it stop working right, real fast..(as an example of ammo)

When you go to the range, it's a good idea to take a cleaning kit with you in your range bag. Can't tell you how many times a quick cleaning has cleared up a dirt problem with both rifles and pistols.

The barrel usually doesn't need cleaning, but the chamber, action, magazines/tubes can get dirty enough to stop up a gun after a couple hunnert rounds...

Cleaning will help, and check for little white plastic pieces from an aged buffer...

Also helps to remove a little stock material from the area where the LSHO rides...
had to do that with my Marlin 795...then went & did it to all my LSHO Marlins...just seemed like a good preventative measure...
Basically you carve a little of the inner inletting away from the LSHO side lever,
and make sure the hole has plenty of clearance around the downward-pointing section of the lever...

Pay special attention to the Divots on each side of the barrel's chamber when you clean it...
they are where the Extractors fit when the bolt comes forward...
if they aren't clean, it can fire out of battery and spray burnt powder to the right & up...
also causes empty case extraction problems...true of any weapon that has a forward extractor...
