Default Good semi for ~300$

I am looking to get a good durable handgun for self defense probably a .40 so I can have the 15+1 and still have power, for around $300. I was looking at the Taurus 24/7 Pros and wondering about any opinions of it and any.

You might look @ some of the Gun auction websites to see what is available in your price range. You need to find a model that fits your hand well. Check out your local gun stores for some used models. $300 is a bit low for a new 40 cal. Good Luck

If there is a rental shooting range nearby, you might try renting a few different guns to see how they fit. If you shop long enough, you'll find a gun in your price range. But if you can't shoot it well, what would be the point? Find a gun that works for you, first. Then start shopping for a new or used one in your price range.

I second Bruce's advice.

Also...The only place I'd think you might find a decent .40 for $300 is maybe at a gunshow...otherwise you are prolly looking at $400-500 out the door in most shops and it's not hard to go over $600.

You could pick up a beretta 96D for around that.....But I would save my pennies and go with the 96fs....That is just my .02

In that price range. I would probably recomend either the Rugers in .40 or the Sigma's in .40

ok, so I have narrowed my choices down to two and have decided to start off with a 9mm... Opinions needed.

Either the new ruger P95 9mm for $349
or Taurus 24/7 for $429
or any other opinions.

Unless you've allready owned a full size Glock i would not recomend buying a mini glock as your first glock. They're a little harder to learn the glock trigger with as your "first" Glock....

The Springfield xd is a well built pistol and most people, not me...but most people like the trigger....

Ps... you want value? Just get a ruger 9mm... thats my thinking on the subject.

Shotgun News always has some Glock police trade ins for a reasonable price. If you get one that is scratched up and has a lot of holster wear, you can have it re-finished pretty cheap.

Are you sure? I remember a gunsmith balking one time about refinishing one of mine? I got charged more than the advertised price because he said Glocks were harder to refinish....

Its been a few years since then and maybe he was messing me over who knows?

This leads to many questions, first and foremost: Is it for home based self defense or legal CCW? IMHO, a 15+1 .40 is not a first choice for either under most circumstances. They tend to be a bit large making CCW harder but not impossible. The .40 easily penetrates several sheetrock walls in a home making family (if you have a family - or neighbors) defense less ideal.

I have owned two .40's and enjoyed them both. A Glock and a Beretta. Never used either for CCW or home defense though - both were for IDPA matches.

Wedge, with a 9mm there are lots of good choices. Personally, I like the mini-Glocks, which, for the 9mm, would mean the Glock 26. The Rugers are fine weapons for the money, but personally, I would stay away from the S&W Sigmas. The triggers on those are abysmally heavy and there is no way to adjust them. The Steyr M-A1 is an excellent pistol. I have one in fact, and it has proven to be both reliable and accurate. They are full-size handguns though. If you want something smaller, definitely consider the Glock Minis or the Springfield XDs.

IShoot I am looking just for home defense.

Pistolenschutze I like the look of the XD's, and I know Glocks are good, but if I'm right they're about $490, and I don't know if I want to spend that much for my first gun yet.
I like the fact the Taurus 24/7 has the Single/Double (around $450) action trigger for extra protection, and the price of the Ruger at $349 looks great, but I'm just afraid it won't be reliable.

I also found some Steyr M1 9mm and .40 for $389 plus $25 shipping on *********, are those really good guns? I always like the look and the fact they come from the same line as an AUG assault rifle.

I say again... do not buy a mini glock as a "first" glock....or for that matter as a "first gun" period!!!! They are harder to learn on!!!!!

Its like playing a video game for the first time and picking to play the hardest mode of play first.... not the way to do it...

Understand, i love Glocks but don't "start" with the Mini's for petes sake !!!!!!!!!! Do you want to hit what your aiming at? Especially in your own home???

Ishootback brought up a good point about wall penetration. That is something you should seriously consider since this is a firearm you will be using in your home. If you come face to face with an intruder in your home at 3:00am, and you have to shoot him, are you going to have your witts about you to think about where the bullet is going to travel after it passes through the bad guy?
I think a great choice for you would be the Taurus MODEL 45 TEN .45/.410.
If you have 5 rounds of .410 loaded with #4 shot or #2 shot, you would not have to worry about accuracy or pass through in a panic situation. 5 rounds of .410 coming out of a 2" revolver AT CLOSE RANGE would make the bad guy look like swiss cheese. I guarentee that he would either be lying on the floor or scrambling out of the nearest exit before you were able to squeeze off round number 3. Don't let the 5 shot max deter you, because that is more than enough with .410 shells loaded in it. When you are in a place that you would not have to worry about pass through, load that thing with .410 000Buck and you have some awesome firepower in the palm of your hand. Just something to consider.

If you're set on the 40 caliber and the $300, you could do a lot worse than the Taurus PT140 Millenium Pro, tho it holds 10, not 15.
I've got one, like it, and have no complaints. I'm waiting for Heine to come out with night sights for it (in the works, they say)

I agree, the Taurus Millennium Pros are good buys, Shimon. I have a MP 745 (.45 ACP) that functions just fine. The slim grip on this pistol only allows for 7 rounds in the mag, but with a .45 that is more than adequate.
