I just purchased 750 cast lead slugs from a student and friend of mine who owns and operates a local business that manufacturers them (shameless plug below
). I bought 250 115 grain LRN in 9mm, 250 158 grain LFN in .38, and 250 158 grain LSWC in .38. The 9mm slugs are sized to .356, and both of the .38 bullets are sized to .358. My question is this: what powder and weight of charge would y'all suggest for these to get the best target loads? For the 9mm I thinking of using 3.8 grains of Bullseye and/or 3 grains of W231 initially. According to my Lyman book, that should give me around 1,000 FPS, and I don't really want to push them faster than that so as to avoid leading. For the .38s I'm thinking 4 grains of Bullseye or possibly 4.5 grains of Unique. The Bullseye should give me around 850 FPS, and the Unique around 900 FPS according to my Speer manual. Any other suggestions? Now for the shameless plug (with permission of the Admin folks): ![]() I bought these bullets from a student (and friend) of mine who recently started his own bullet casting business here locally. He's a man who just retired from the US Army after 20 years of service and two tours in Iraq. I must say, I am greatly impressed with the quality of these bullets. I've checked them with micrometer and weighed a good sampling from each batch. The bullets are extremely uniform and are cast of hard lead. He definitely didn't skimp on the antimony in the mix! The lube is also properly applied and consistent. I expect good things from these bullets when I start sending them downrange, assuming I do my part. He also casts bullets for virtually all common calibers, both handgun and rifle, ranging from .32 ACP up to .45-70, and in various weights. The name of his company is Grand Master Bullets. Anyway, here is his website if you would like to check it out:http://www.grandmasterbullets.com/index.html My friend's son, by the way, is the one who built the website, and he shares in the profit from all orders received through it. ![]()

OK, I took a look at the web site and read up on who they are and what they do. This company is worthy of support, should I have the opportunity I shall try to refer business to them.

Thanks for the link, Pistol. Cast bullets are getting hard to find on my end.
I might have to give them a call. ![]() Art

Thank you all for the warm welcome. Several of you have already visited my site and left comments. Thank you all and I look forward to being involved in the wonderful forum.
Special thanks to Pistolenschutze for introducing me to this form and being the best College Professor I have ever had. Professors who don't lean clear over the liberal socialist side seem to be few and far between. |
