WELCOME!!! I was in the same AO in '72 with the 1st Cav. I was a young Warrant that flew snakes in an Aerial Artillery Unit called Blue Max. Lovely garden spots you mentioned.

After Vietnam I got the FT. Riley experience with the 1st Infantry too. 1 1/2 years there seemed like a lifetime. I probably would have stayed in the Army longer and made a career of it if it hadn't been for the suck at Riley.

I missed Nam via ROK and 2ID in 2/72 Armor. Also had the Fort Riley experience 1/28 Inf in a Weapons platoon. Same opinion of Fort Riley and Junction City. ETS'd Dec 1971 after 34 months active duty.
Thanks, guys, for your service. Glad your home.

I served 1971-1973 and 1975-1979. Alaska 1971-1973 got deverted while enroute to Viet Nam. 11C mortar slave. It all sucked. Glad you made it back Merillks. I salute you.

I remember Tay Nihn, my last week in country - off line and bunkerline duty. Watched many "dustoff's" from the Cav coming into base Med facilities. They were working in the mtns north of Tay Nihn ( Crest?). In 68, we still had the C models and maybe B model gunships, Loaded to the gills, but once they were off the ground, they seemed unstoppable. ( Thankyou for that smoke). We started seeing The Cobra's late 68-69 with the light fire teams . Loved those Hughes 500's for pre-ambush terrain detail. Welcome home .

My unit arrived in '65 with the Cav. and was the primary provider of helicopter gunship support for Hal Moore and his troopers at the Battle of the Ia Drang. Later during your time, we had Batteries at Tay Ninh and Quan Loi. During my time, we lived at "The Plantation" down by Bien Hoa, Long Thanh - North and then at the big Da Nang Airbase up North in I Corp. When the 1st Cav. finally stood down and went back to the States in August of '72, I went up to work for an Air Cav. Unit in Pleiku where we flew the traditional Hunter-Killer cav. recon. missions using the little OH-6 (Hughes 500) Scouts you mentioned. Awesome manueverability in those machines. It was a very exciting time for a young man. The only part of Vietnam that I didn't get to see much of was down in the IV Corp in the Delta.

Glad we ALL made it home!!!! Working to provide close fire support for the ground-pounders when they were in a jam was my greatest pleasure.
