I am about to buy a Ruger blackhawk in .41 mag. What I can't
decide on is a 4 5/8 or 6 1/2in barrel. The gun will be used for hunting. I like the looks of the shorter gun. Does barrel length matter for this caliber.

Az45 Go with the 6 1/2 especially for hunting...more velocity & more acureate...If you have a choice in cal. I would get a .44
I've hunted with hand guns for years also reloaded beginning with .357 mag to .44 mag then a .41mag and I went back to .44 mag....a .41 mag will do the trick ...don't get me wrong but my personal preferance is .44mag ![]() Reference this thread. Strictly for logistic reasons, the .44 is better. Ammo is far more readily available, and so are components. That said, I still like the .41 Mag for the same reason I prefer the 6.5x55 to the .30-06 or the .308. Penetration is better, and trajectory is a bit flatter due to higher sectional density of the slug.
I have used the .41 and the .44 for hunting over the last thirty years, and the .357 also. If I lived in the land of the big bad bears, I would wear a .44 all the time. Down here in the middle of the US, the .357 is plenty, most of the time. The .41 I use is an elderly Model 58 fixed sight gun with a 4 1/8" tube that was one of San Antonio PD's guns back in the long ago. I have shot two elk with it, and broke the shoulders both times. The short barrel is a lifesaver in heavy brush, because it is amazing how much more brush the extra two inches will catch. There's my nickel's worth. The shorter gun is a little handier. The longer one may be a tad easier to shoot and you will get 50-100 FPS more velocity with most loads. But if you like the shorter one then that's the one you should get. Who are you trying to please, here?

I just bought a taurus tracker in 41 magnum with 4 inch barrel, and like the 41 caliber ALOT!
same basic powder charge as my 44 magnum rounds,20 rounds h110,just uses slightly lighter bullets for more velocity. probably wont get as much expansion or knock down power of the 44 magnum, but definately not a sissy caliber. If you not a handloader, the 44 would make more sense since ammo is cheaper, and readily available. learn to handload and get yourself a 41,you wont be sorry. ![]()

The .41 Mag and the Tracker are both excellent choices for a field gun. Very neat. The Brazilian boys make some neat iron (and titanium, and aluminum, and polymer....).
