Default 270-(308/7mm-08) :) :(

I've been wanting to get a .270 caliber rifle based off of the 308 case. Sounds good I said to myself. Okay....How much is a custom rifle?.......Nevermind......OHH!!! I know a savage would be perfect, surely one of these barrel manufacturers chamber one for such a caliber....NOooooo.........Back to the drawing board.....

Is this truely that wild of a concept?

That 7mm08 is pretty close as your gona get without big $. Get a rifle with a long bbl so you can get the most out of the 7mm-08. Also Hornady makes light mags for the 7mm -08. worth looking into. IMO

try the 6.8 rem spc. It would be in the neighborhood of what you are looking for.

Is your heart truly set on the .277 diameter? If not, then check out the already mentioned 7mm-08 or the .260 Remington. .264....277....284...they're all pretty darn close performers when stuffed into a .308 length case. (Personally, me being a .264 nut, I kinda think the .260 would give you a slight edge over either the .277 or .284 in both sectional density and ballistic coefficient departments. Plus factory load availability is always nice too)
6.8SPC would also almost fit the bill too as jackson posted.

But...if it's a "just because I want to" project, by all means go for it!
You should be able to find a reamer for either the .270-08 or .270-08 Ackley Improved.
Rentals in both versions available here...http://www.reamerrentals.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=32
A good barrel blank should run you roughly $300-400 (Hart & Lilja is what I've got pricelists for at the moment. Both brands are excellent quality).
Chambering and fitting the barrel to your action can run anywhere from $300 up to 600-700 depending on the shop you use. (Or if you've got the tools & know-how it'll just cost ya the time)
A set of dies in a wildcat or otherwise custom caliber will probably go for about $100 or more.
All the fun of working up a pet load is purely bonus. Any excuse to spend more range time is always a good thing!

A scary looking pricetag when you start to total things up, but it'll be a unique rifle that you can build up the way you want it.

Oh yeah...once you've got in that far, might as well start eyeballing a nice purty chunk of wood for a new stock, a new trigger, any other goodies that you'd like to add to your new custom.
(Yup it's a disease, but the biggest thing it usually affects is your pocketbook...and maybe marital relations a bit too.

I saw those reamer rentals. (Wow, that sounds bad..) I have also found the .270 redding, which apparently is what I'm looking for.....Well actually it's a 243 winchester that's blown out to a 270 cal, but being that the 243 is basically a 308 necked down that's close enough for me.

Yeah, once you start getting into wildcats you'll find many versions of the same ole song & dance (.270 Redding, .270-08, .270-08 Ackley and such based on the .308 family) that all get the job done the same with minor differences in how they formed the case. 20°, 30°, 40° shoulders, it looks like they've got the whole range covered there.
All three are available in the Redding die catalog too under the "custom" section.

And then I see a .277/.257Roberts & Improved based on the good ole 7x57 case, the .270 IHMSA & .270Savage based on the .250 or .300 Savage case, and then a boat-load of full -06 length wildcats too besides the factory .270Win.

Better lock up your checkbook before ya get started!

I just want a 270-08 because I thought it up in my head. Not that I'm surprised that there are already wildcats in that cal, but it's a nice thought. I know that in all practicality it makes little difference in whether I got a 260 rem, a 270-08, or a 7mm-08. But why be the same?

I'd have a double rifle made up in .270-08 and watch the jaws drop when you show up at deer camp...

And...you'll always have the "whudizit" factor of not having one of the same ole cookie-cutter cartridges too. That in itself is one of the best things about a wildcat (or any oddball).

Around here my precious little 6.5x55 is an uncommon cartridge, especially if it's in something besides a surplus M96 (which you're not seeing out in the woods near as often anymore). Just to stick with the .264 theme in my gun locker, I'm still scheming on either a 6.5-06 or a 6.5x55Ackley rebarrel job for a bad barreled M77 .270 that I've got laying around.

Sounds like a good idea. Sometimes I want a bad barreled krag and put a 7mm-40 with an improved case on it.
