Default A music thread . . .

Well, we have an "average age" thread running right now. I thought it might be fun to see what popular songs some of you most remember and enjoyed from your teenage, "growing up" years. Here's a list of some of my favorites:

Puff, the Magic Dragon--Peter, Paul, and Mary
Black is Black--Los Bravos
Patches--Dicky Lee
Ebony Eyes--The Everly Brothers
Foolish Little Girl--The Shirelles
Greenfields--The Brothers Four
Lonely Bull--Tijuana Brass
Town Without Pity--Gene Pitney

Nope, you won't see any Beatles on my list! I always liked the ballads, and especially the folk stuff.

OK, Marlin, now tell us about Benny Goodman.

I'm a Classical music nut, Pistol. All my collection consists of Beethoven, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Mendelssohn and a little Dvorák, Brahms and Bach.

I did like the Irish Rovers, some of the Beach Boys, but none of the Rock and Roll. Loved Elvis doing Gospel along with the Oak Ridge Boys and the Statlers.

I was just ribbing you about Benny Goodman, Marlin.

I don't disagree with any of the classical choices you name, though I incline more toward Strauss and Tchaikovsky than Brahms and Bach. I could listen to Beethoven all day, and often do. I must admit though, my taste for classical music did not develop until I was in my 30s. As a kid, I was very much into the folks stuff. I still am to some extent, mostly because those old songs bring back so many memories.

I think the Beatles did some good ballads too. All of yours are good, I would add the beach boys, jan & dean, chuck berry all the hot rod/car music.

Actually XM is really cool, classical for both Marlin and the other Marlin (me) and it's only going to get better when XM and Sirus merge.

Pistol I can't really answer your questions about favorite song(s), so I'll have to do it with genre.

Blues are great
Rap is sh**
Reggia is cool
Christian rock, soul and others are good
Country isn't ever allowed in this house.
Oldies (ya know like 70s 80s LOL )
Ceberal new age, its like meditation music.

EDIT:I forgot to say or tell you all that you can get XM via the internet too.

Default Rock and Roll for ever Disco never!

I was a teenager in the 70's when that evil force called disco first raised it's ugly head!

I liked all kinds of Rock and Roll, Bob Seger, Eric Clapton, Boston, Arrowsmith. I liked Led Zepplin for about one year, but don't like them any more. I used to like all the Beatles music, now I only like their early pre-druggie stuff.

Their are still some new bands making good rock music! Even though I'm 45 it makes me feel young that I can still enjoy some new music. Nickel Back, Green Day, Creed, Matchbox Twenty and other current bands are still putting out good music!

Cream definitely with Ginger Baker on drums can't be beat. I'm surprised no one has listed 'The Gratefull Dead'. I'm a Deadhead forever.

In what period, Berto? This one (1965-66):

Jerry Garcia - guitar, vocals
Bob Weir - guitar, vocals
Ron "Pigpen" McKernan - keyboards, harmonica, vocals, percussion
Phil Lesh - bass guitar, vocals
Bill Kreutzmann - drums

This one (1992-95):

Jerry Garcia - guitar, vocals
Bob Weir - guitar, vocals
Vince Welnick - keyboards, vocals
Phil Lesh - bass guitar, vocals
Bill Kreutzmann - drums
Mickey Hart - drums

Or somewhere in between?
