357 mag 180 or 158 g plated ammo - The Firearms Forum

Hi
Planning to reload 357mag with 158 and 180g plated bullet heads. Anyone got any reloading data. Plan to shoot through marlin underlever carbine.

You need to use cast bullet loads with plated bullet (plated not jacketed). The Lyman 49th edition has 357 Mag Rifle loads for 155 gr (close enough) cast bullets but no 180 grain cast bullet loads. In the pistol load section of the manual they have loads for 170 grain cast bullets. Use the starting load and work up from there watching for excess pressure signs but do NOT exceed 5% less than the max loads listed for 170 gr cast bullets.

Personally for my lever 357 Winchester Model 92 I use 125 gr jacketed bullets. Lyman's manual has loads for that combo. I use H4227 (same exact powder as IMR4227) at lower levels (like 38Spl +P load level) which works out to about 14 grains. But use the data that in is in the Lyman manual or anyone else's, for that matter. Be safe.

The poster says he will be using plated bullets. I assume he means plated bullets and not jacketed (??). Anyway plated bullets need to use cast bullet loads, not jacketed loads and I noticed you gave him data on some jacketed bullets and some cast bullets. He probably should not use the jacketed loads(??).

I know LD, I have used several thousand plated bullets in my time as a reloader. However, berrys does recommend using low-mid range jacketed data for their plated bullets, even though i always used lead data anyway, and i also included 158 gr lead SWC data as well...
