I've always wondered how bad the shock wave would feel, never tried it myself. Can't imagine it feels good!

Interesting I was always under the assumption that the firearm would blow up somehow.

Hop on Wikipedia and take a look at Ivan's APS and ASM-DT amphibious rifles.

I could imagine a pretty good shot wave. think of a m-80 in a bucket of water. i wonder about recoil seeing water is denser than air

I've read a number of articles on the subject, and they indicate it is actually quite safe with a quality firearm and normal ammo. Just make sure there is no air left in the weapon, or danger and damage can ensue.

That's an awesome picture. I love how you can see the twist.
If I hadnt seen this done to a gun repeatedly, I would be using a string to fire the weapon. It would be cool to see various guns tested like this and the results. Maybe have a block of gel and see how far it would penetrate. I'm at work, so I cant watch videos on youtube, but it would be cool.

Well, I did that years ago (BVC - before video cameras) and got the same results. When I said that on the web sites, I was called names and told the gun just HAD to blow up. I guess not.

Jim, what weapons did you use and what calibers? Just kinda curious. Any 1911's in .45?

I've fired both a Glock 19 and an S&W SW40F under water, No big deal.
As a note, the bullets (.40 & 9mm) only went about 5 feet, and would only penetrate one side of a Pepsi can at 3-4 feet. The water was about 1-2 feet deep. I have it on video cassette somewhere. Both guns functioned fine.
