Wifes grandfathers revolver - The Firearms Forum

Just came into my posession and any info would be interesting. It has a 5 shot cylinder in .38 S&W caliber with a 6 inch bbl. Top rib reads Iver Johnsons arms & cycle work and the Fitchburg address. Patent dates are 4-6-86--2-15-87--5-11-87--8-25-96--I think these dates are correct but some numbers are very faint. No markings on either side of bbl. Number beneath left grip panel is G90838 with 90838 also on bottom of top strap above cylinder. Hope this is enough info. Thanks in advance.

these three patent dates were used on the large frame 38 S&W second model in 1897-1899 and the G letter code was used on this model in 1898 and 1899. G 90838 was manufactured in 1899.

Only difference between the first and second model is the barrel latch. Main serial number location on left side of grip frame grips must be removed to see. The Second Model features a double top post barrel latch, flat leaf hammer spring and two cross pins in the lower frame.
