A lady in front of me at the grocery store (Winn Dixie) who was obviously well into her 40's got carded. She was buying a case of coors light and the baggie boy asked for her id and then scanned it. What the heck? Scanned it into the computer like a credit card. The lady and i were dumbfounded.

Wow, that is weird.
Here in MN, the only thing I have ever seen the magnetic strip used for is at the auction center, to get a bidding number. I didn't even know they worked until I attended an auction.

I'm sure the super markets are getting sick of thousand dollar fines everytime the stupid snot nose kids at the register sells to an under age nark. So they are told to scan every license no matter what age. No license no sell.

The checking the ID I can understand. She may have been "obviously well into her 40's" to you, but different people see things differently. Back in the late 70s I was carding people at a bar. Woman thought I was making a funny when I wanted to see an ID. She was there with her husband. They had come to town to see their grandson graduate high school. All the while they are telling me this, and that it had been cute, at first, when I carded the grandmother, but it wasn't cute anymore, I was looking at her. I finally decided, based on the fact that the backs of her upper arms flopped around, that she was over 40, 'cause I've never seen that on anyone under forty. So I let them in. But her face, and the rest of her body? The drinking age was 18, back then, and she did not look old enough to come in.
But, anyhow. So I could see carding her. But if it was me, I wouldn't have let him swipe it. Don't nobody swipe my driver's license. All they need is to see that DOB.

Well, you know it was because she was buying........Coors light.
If it had been a good beer, they would have let her through. ![]() ![]() If they want to see my ID, that is what they can do. "SEE" it. The only person that gets to "hold" it, is a police officer.

That is a good point, there are a lot of crooks out there. There is no reason for the scan.

She just laughed at the guy then looked at me. I said I wondered if it had something to do with obama wanting to know who is drinking beer now.

Here in Italy, since some years ago, every where you pay by c/card they can ask you to show your ID, but they don't scan it.

I think I would balk at someone running my DL through a scanner.
Thanks for the heads up.

I just renewed my DL on line. Beats the crap out of waiting in a room with a buch of immigrants.
![]() I got to the end of the registration, paid, and printed my new DL. It's about 3x5 and has a description only (and my DL#). It's good for 45 days. I wonder how that would have worked? ![]() At my age, the only one that gets to see my DL is the police or the local gun shop.

In Washington, you can get a RFID chip implanted in your DL.
Among other things. http://www.dol.wa.gov/driverslicense/edlfaq.html#rfid Howdy Big Brother! ![]()

Say, how is it that those magnetic strips get deactivated again? I know if you put credit cards in eel skin wallets they stop working, I assume you can probably do something to them so they don't store your information any longer?

![]() I can see where running a magnet over the card might mess thing up, but eel skin? As for the chips, a good hammer will take care of that. I think.... ![]()

Yes, I heard that eel skin demagnetizes those strips. I don't suppose they are very popular wallets anymore...

Most eel skin wallets are hagfish and have no effect on the strip. Wallets with magnetic clasps have been known to scramble the strip on the original magnetic strips. Undid the strip on my computer room card by putting it in the shirt pocked with my tweaker, (small screwdriver) with a magnet on the end of it and a magnetized shank. New cards aren't as easliy affected.

Look into machinists' catalogs for demagnetizers. Lots of other fun stuff, too.
Available free online. I am a machinist. LOL! Also known as "Mischief Incorporated."

Pete, you fixed it, but you didn't fix it right. There is no such thing as an "illegal immigrant".
There are four types of people in this country, that are not US citizens. You have your Immigrants. They came here with the intention of living here forever, and eventually becoming US citizens. You have your Resident Aliens. These are people, like Michael J. Fox or Robert Goulet, who are citizens of another country, but live here all the time. They have work cards, so they are allowed to work in this country, but have no desire to become US citizens, but instead are happy staying (for the two I mentioned) Canadian. You have your Non-resident Aliens. These are people that are here temporarily. They are here working for a short time, or here going to school, or here on vacation. They have a Visa, that is good for only a limited amount of time, and then they must go back to their own country. Al three of these types of people are legal. They are here with both their and my countries' permissions. Then you have the last type of people. The border jumpers. The fence climbers. The river waders. The Illegal Aliens. They do not want to live here. They are not here with anyone's permission - neither my country's or theirs. But they are not Illegal Immigrants. Because, as I said earlier, immigrants are here legally. These people are Illegal Aliens. Calling them "immigrants" legitimizes them. Y'all need to quit using the term, and continue to call 'em what they are. Criminals.

im·mi·grant /ˈɪmɪgrənt/ Show Spelled[im-i-gruhnt]
–noun 1.a person who migrates to another country, usually for permanent residence. 2.an organism found in a new habitat. Semantics. "Then you have the last type of people. The border jumpers. The fence climbers. The river waders. The Illegal Aliens." There are also legal aliens. But I do see your point. I like the term "criminal" much better..
