I found this spider while painting last month. Took me awhile to get it posted. I've looked on the web, cannot ID it. I live in Northern Cal. Never seen one like it before. Anyone got a clue? His legs spread, were about 2.5" in diameter.
Thanks, Bruce

Bruce, it could be of the species "democraticus liberalis," ugly, creepy, and it will bite you in the butt when you least expect it.

Not big enough to eat so I wouldn't mess with it. Don't have a clue.

Did it have a web?
The closest match I can find is the Black and Yellow Argiope. They are wide spread across the USA. They like shrubbery, tall plants and flowers(and my cabin front porch). The web has a distinctive design similar to writing across it to attract prey. As kids we called them "Writing Spiders". The colors on your picture do not quite match however but are similar Check one of the pictures on this site and it is very similar to yours http://bugguide.net/node/view/2025

I believe you are right , Bob. The middle row, left pic is the one. I found this spider on a wrought iron fence post. No web around, which was strange.
(No spiders were harmed in the taking of the photos) 20 years ago, when we first moved in the house, brand new. I was forever finding wolf spiders & tossing them out the back door. My wife thought I was nuts. Then along came the daddy long-legs & others. I wasn't so nice to them. ![]() Since we got rid of the carpets & went to hardwood floors, & scraped the popcorn off the ceilings & went with a light texture ( we have vaulted ceilings ) , the spider problem is all but eliminated. But I still like them outside. I get the orb weavers in the garden, which are real neat. I don't feel the same about the black widows, tho. ![]() I saved the website for future ref. Thanks Bob! ![]()

I like the Black and Yellow Argiope spiders. We have quite a few here. I don't ever bother them since they catch skeeters.
