Hello all I am totally new to reloading and just bought myself a Lee reloading kit, I using Lee dies and lee case lube, I am trying to reload for 30 06, and needless to say I have gotten really good at removing stuck cases from my die, thank goodness for big hammers and punches, I have also learned that my bench top is no where near heavy enough as I broke the press clean out of the counter top do to a stuck case. LOL. I tend to learn best threw trial and error and needless to say I am learning alot.
So what am I do wrong I have stuck 8 cases out of 40 that I have been resizing, I think that I am using plenty of lube but to be honest I dont know for sure, I am swabbing the inside neck of the casing with a cotten swap dipped in lube, my die seems to be clean and is new. really getting discouraged please help.

This is how I lube my cases. I used the this
http://www.hornady.com/store/One-Shot-Spray-Case-Lube/ I simply put the cases in the loading tray, spray them with one even coat uniformly all the way around and wait about one minute. Then I begin re-sizing/deprimeing. I never have a stuck case if I do it that way. Too much lube is not a good thing and obviously not enough is not good either. Just go by the directions off of the can and you will be ok. Hope that helps. |

Thanks I will pick some of that up next trip to bass pro, So I am guessing it must be a lube issue, is there anything else that will cause stuck casing? Also if anyone has any suggestions or tips about reloading please pass them this way, I already picked up two reloading manuals and I am studying them as we speak, Seems like you can spend a lot of money on gadgets to make reloading easier what are some must haves and what is just a waste of money such as lathe style case trimmers, tumblers, ultra sonic cleaner, and so forth all I have is the basics at the moment. Thanks sorry for all the questions

It would appear that you aren't using enough lube on the outside of your cases . You don't want any lube on the shoulder or neck (except inside every 4th or 5th case) . I'd advise getting a lube pad and some case lube . Sprayons are hit or miss , especially for a beginner ! I've stuck less than a handful of cases in 47 years , so it ain't rocket surgery !

oldsap hit the nail on the head. It's the outside lube that is lacking. Just a very light coat is all you'll need, don't get too crazy. I'll try to find a good thread and link ya to it.

New to reloading. New dies?
Did you take your new dies completely apart and clean all the crap and gunk and grease out and off of them before you started to use them? Lee is notorious for metal shavings grease from the machining process and a heavy greasy film to inhibit rust. If you did not clean these dies completely with a solvent like Breakclean before you put them to use, they will surely give you grief. Clean em up good before you try anything else. |

Excellent point Steve! RCBS even makes a point to clean their dies before first use to remove the shipping protective coating.

I am still using that same batch of lube that I tell about in post # 15 of the link that woolleyworm gave. That is some excellent lube and as I said, a little goes a long way. Every time I use it, I give JLA a little silent thank you!!

Around here, when it comes to guns and reloading, the only dumb question is the unasked question. Read away and ask away. It can save a tragic accident. You've received good answers to your OP about stuck cases. Like Twicepop, I use Imperial sizing wax and have never had a stuck case (yet). Regarding reloading gear: there are a few threads covering that. For myself, I was starting out on a fairly tight budget so got what I only absolutely needed. Reloading press, Used, RCBS progressive. I can use the progressive function or use it one stage at a time. Dies. RCBS Carbide pistol caliber dies; Lee delux rifle set with neck and full sizing dies. Powder measure Digital scales Hand primer Primer pocket cleaner I opted for an ultrasonic cleaner, most go for a vibrator cleaner; a few go for drum cleaners. I use a Lee zip trim to trim brass and give it a polish. Lee case trimmers Brass deburring tool Kinectic bullet puller Logbook for tracking load information Digital caliper for measuring COL on finished rifle cartridge I got a powder trickler, but don't use it much...I use a small metal spatula to add or subtract those last few granules of powder to bring it to the correct weight. Im still on the very first bottle I ever made too. One tube of Lee paste lube to 8 ounces of isopropyl alcohol. shake and spray.. I never get stuck cases.

Just to make sure, it is a "2oz" tube of Lee lube to 8oz alcohol? I want to mix up Josh's recipe and use it so I want to get it right. thanks Joe

Welcome, fyrfghter1983. You've come to a great place for help, experience, and great advice. People here are friendly and glad to share any help they can.
As already said in this thread, the right amount of lube on the cases will avoid stuck cases. I never took my dies apart to clean them until they had been pretty well used...never had any need to do that. They worked fine right out of the box...but that's just my experience. Others may have had different. Read the threads here; check you-tube videos; get a good manual and check it out carefully. I use the Lee manual, ignoring the very in-your-face advertising for Lee products. I also went through the class our club provides for new reloaders; very useful. If you can find someone near where you are who reloads, get some pointers from them. Do not be afraid to ask questions. The only dumb question when it comes to reloading is the one not asked. You'll get some good opinions back, based on experience. Let us know what you are reloading, and how you're getting on. We'll be glad to see a range report as you get started. Yep.. and theres really no such thing as too m uch alcohol too, within reason of course. It just needs to be thin enough to spray evenly. I use a pump spray bottle. 2 oz paste lube to 8 oz alcohol is a good starting point. you can dilute with more alcohol or add more lube from there. I like it rather thin. The alcohol helps the lube coat the case evenly while you shake em around in the freezer bag. and then you get em out and set em up on teh desk and the alcohol very quickly dries off and leave a very thin even film of lube on the cases.
