Is there any noticable differences in the two firearms. Is this a Pre '64/Post 64 Winchester type issue? I have a chance to pick up a very nice Mark I for around $200. Would I be better served going with the newer gun? Thanks for any input.....

The Pre/Post Winchester was one of quality. The Pre's were a better made rifle. I also believe it is Winchester/USRA take over time.
The Ruger Mk I vs Mk II is one of functionality, The Mk I does not have a last shot bolt hold open feature which, if you do not count, makes the firing pin hit an empty chamber. Not good for the chamber. There might be more such as 9 shot mags vs 10 shot, but I am not sure. Hope this helps.

I definitely prefer to have the bolt stay in the open position after the last shot has been fired. The Ruger 10/22s do not have this and I have fired on an empty chamber more times than I care for!
I choose the MKIIs for this reason. Another MKII difference is the scallops machined into the receiver near the bolt "ears". Not a big thing but does allow a easier grasp for cocking. |
