cbrown,
Looks like your S&W model 36 Chief's Special was made around 1976-77. To give you a realistic ballpark value for the gun, we need more info: barrel length, amount of blue, correct grips, general overall condition and some pictures. That said, I would expect it to be worth in the $100 - $350 range for a FAIR condition gun with some sins to a near mint M36. Got some pix? Jolly |

depending on the gun like jolly said the value will vary significantly. but in good condition 350 is about right

cbrown, what do you plan to do with the gun? you gonna sell it? keep it? carry it?
i cant tell for sure but it doesnt appear to have been refinished... that means its in 98% condition. it doesnt appear that it's been fired, but you can see a tad of finish were on the cylinder lug from being opened some. if i were you i'd cherish such a gun that was given to you by your grand father. would love to have like that |

awesome. it's in good shape for a gun that's been carried. is there any chance it's been refinished? i dont think so, but im just surprised that a gun that's been carried is in such premium condition

cbrown. there is also a little grip adapter thing that would be period to the gun. there was a another recent thread about the model 36 that showed a pic of this little gadget. i dont remember the name of it. but here is the link and you can see the thing
http://thefirearmsforum.com/showthre...chiefs+special i would put one of these on the gun if i was unhappy with the grips, it would not detract from the value of the gun, and if i remember correctly they are removable |

pachmayr used to make a grip adaptor but now only tyler does. it's called the tyler t-grip, come in various colors and is priced right

I carry my 36 every day, with the original wood grips. Mine is the 3" barrel, not the snub. It's a favorite of mine.
