I collect pictures of war planes and I'm looking for a good picture of puff.I have the two that are on here, but that's just showing it's fire power ...not the plane.
That you in advance if anyone has them or can tell me where I can get them. Pete Sgt E-5 H&S Co.1st Batt. 9th Marines (Walking Dead) Viet – Nam 65 -66

Reminds me of an interview I once saw on History Channel. They were talking to a Vietnam veteran who served as an Lt. He told about one time getting into the S#!T, calling for artillery support and seeing a low flying aircraft in the area. He gets on the horn to the aircraft and says "clear out, artillery is incoming," pilot reports back, "I am aware, I AM the artillery."
He was flying Puff. ![]() -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks guys, I don't post much in VMBB but if you've read any of my posts............. never mind that, just "THANKS"!

Good Morning Pete...I know they are posted on here someplace but it has been so long ago I couldn't find them---I have those two pictures of Puff and if you e-mail me I will send them along to you.....They were taken in DaNang springtime of 69....I recall the operations when Puff was flown over the old French ammo dump that was supposed to have been cleared...A work crew from my Seabee Battalion had gone in to lay concertina wire and the E-6 in charge of the crew got hammered by a 'bouncing Betty'---cut in half...one of our Hospital Corpsman crawled in to drag the parts of Jonesy out---was awarded the Bronze for his efforts...there were many secondary explosions when Puff hosed down the area...Chief

Hey Kimber Man, I have a photo of a Puff that was hit by a rocket/motar while airborne. All personnel on board werewounded. The plane was hit during TET '69 over Long Binh. A young Sgt. on board was awarded the MOH for his actions while on board. If you want a copy of it, I can email it to you.
Puff's tail Number was: EL 770 Can't remember the Sgt.'s name, but he died few years ago. I met him once while attending the Air Force Senior NCO Academy. Raf Last edited by Rafsob; 03-10-2008 at 08:36 AM.. |

All due respect my friend but in the Air Force they taught us to wait till the aircraft had serious mechanical problems that would cause it to crash before we would jump from it.

Pete,
When I first heard that Sgt. Levitow had passed on it hit me pretty hard. It was as if a brother had died. He and I lived and experienced life pretty much the same and I think it brought home our mortality. As young men we always felt that we could do anything. That we were supermen. However, as we get older we realize the truth of our venerability, which is tenable at best. Thanks for reading about his ordeal. I always felt that as long as someone would remember you, it increases your immortality. |

Rafsob....
You hit some good points in your last e-mail. when your young you feel and act like superman sometimes. it catches up to you as you get older. You say to yourself ...........I did what ?????????? I must have been a nut or something ??? I've done some crazy things in my life and almost died for some of them, but it's nice to hear stories where people stuck up for what they believe in. Thank you for sharing that with me. Pete |

I realize this is an older thread but after reading it it brought back some memories. I don't know if any members here flew on Puff or not but I just wanted to make a quick comment. Everytime I see pictures or hear someone mention "Puff" I get a little choked up. On my next birthday I will be 61. Had it not been for Puff or Spooky as they were later called, I would have never made it to 20. Thankyou Spooky crewmembers whereever you may be and God bless.
A forever grateful Marine. |

Hi to all....glad I saw this thread. Sometimes something is put
together, invented, thought up , or whatever...and it just works like you never thought it would...and you dont change it much unless it proves better. That is one feeling I have about the AC47 packages... One story it made me think of , if I can tell now....Even though I am and have been a staunch republican from a democratic Georgia family, I have always maintained respect for President Carter and his efforts ( his, not the fools he chose ) for our country. Anyway, one night couple of years after he left DC, I watched a long and very in depth interview of him on tv...of course the subject of the badly executed "snatch" embassy raid in Iran came up, and was covered in somewhat fine detail. At one point he was finally asked that if the initial mission start in the desert had been successful and made its way to the compound and was able to go in and get the hostages and complete any extraction , how could this possibly have succeeded when the Irainians vowed to fill the streets and completely encompass the embassy and invade...at that point Mr. Carter's face was very graven and his tone was very resolute as he descibed the AC47 or puff type aircraft that was in place and had been given the presidential order allowing them to see that the surrounding perimeter of the embassy was void of problems and to be cleared with prejudice. He even went into detail regarding the mounted howitzers fore and aft per that aircraft. Although remembering the sad items involving our losses in that action, I felt very proud as an american that night watching and listening to this former President explain parts of the mission in such detail, and the obvious demeanor he reflected of his resolve. I dont know, politics aside, it felt good that night thinking of what the surrounding area of those stinking streets would have looked like had that aircraft opened up as ordered........ ![]() |
