Default A Little St. Patrick's Humor

A Wee Bit of Mischief From the RNC…

By Susan Jones

March 17, 2004

(CNSNews.com) - In honor of St. Patrick's Day, Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie released the following limerick in tribute to Democratic nominee John Kerry:

There once was a man from Nantucket,
Whose misstatements could fill up a bucket.
Oft the truth he has bent,
Like his "Irish descent."
Of his record he says, "I'll just duck it."

The limerick came at the end of an RNC press release saying that Gillespie -- the son of an Irish immigrant -- would march in New York's St. Patrick's Day parade on Wednesday.

"The Republican Party, the party of opportunity, is a natural home for new citizens," Gillespie said. "As chairman of the RNC, I am committed to making sure our party continues to reach out to Irish Americans and all Americans, on St. Patrick's Day and every day of the year."

Gillespie planned to march on Wednesday with Steven McDonald, an NYPD officer who was shot in the line of duty in 1986 and paralyzed from the neck down.

The RNC said McDonald forgave his teenage assailant and has made several trips to Ireland to discuss the possibilities of reconciliation through forgiveness. He also spoke at the 1996 Republican National Convention.
