Hey all, i was shooting some today, took out my 2 russians, and just for kicks my 12 ga. Thats where i ran into problems. It doesnt always fire! It chambers the round fine, and when i pull the trigger it goes "click" but the shell doesnt fire. so i kept the muzzle down range waited a while, nothing happened, so i ejected the shell and there were no marks on the primer or anywhere else for that matter. so i chamber the next shell, BOOM it goes off just like it should when i pull the trigger. so i keep shooting and every 4th round or so wouldnt get fired, and that would happen 3 or 4 times, and then it would shoot okay again for a while.
any ideas? thanks alot.

I would suspect cleaning it is in order. Blasting the firing pin seat with solvent might break some junk loose. I saw something similar because of a broken spring, once, but that was on a completely different type of gun. Rear half of the spring would sometimes hang and pin wouldn't extend. Disconcerting on a full-auto, multi-barrel gun, to say the least.

It is not allways the case but I have seen lots of firing pin springs, that are not rounded carefully or larger on one end, (some are meant to be and some are not ) I like to stick them to a piece of duct tape and push on them, while wearing eye protection of course, watching for one side to look "pregnant" under stress!
And check the sides of the hammer (with it unloaded)for a wobble or sticking on one side of It's pin ! And then again sometimes Its just dirty and needs careful cleaning! Last edited by fredarmory; 05-15-2003 at 09:22 AM.. |

i dont think dirtiness is the cause, this happened the first time i shot it out of the box. first round fired fine. second round nothin happened. so i dont think the pin is fouled. so the nect most likely cause is a spring eh?
Smoking Guns- the russians are 91/30 and m44

Sorry, I thought you were talking about shotguns...Never had a 91/30 and the only M44 I had was a nice shooter...but, last year a feller wanted it worse than I did...

its a mossberg (dont say thats the problem haha) maverick 88, brand new. only had 2 shots through it before it acted funny. so i'm guessing it has to be the firing pin spring. cause i pull the trigger, and i hear it go click, but theres no marks on the primer of the unfired shell. so how do i go about fixing this?

Unless you are a gunsmith, taking the mossberg apart, is a very complicated proccess. If you can get a manual that covers disassembly, you might be allright, then again some gunsmiths are very reasonable alternatives.
The hammer or trigger assembly might also have too weak of a spring driving the hammer against the firing pin. My Daddy liked his Winchester ! |

Antiquedr is probably right, but just in case, are you shooting "Reloads?" Some loaders might set the primers to deep, or maybe the cases have been reloaded to much.
