Premonitions
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I can remember having flown with two different pilots in the 45th Medical Company who absolutely scared me. Not because of their inadequate skills, lack of common sense, or knowledge of the aircraft, but because they were so absolutely frightened. Both mentioned to me and others that they knew they weren't going to make it. Both had this "premonition" if you will, that they were doomed. It was uncomfortable to be with either of these two, particularly if we were having a few beers because inevitably those fears would pour out and the mention of not making it would surface. Neither did make it. Both went down in separate incidents, all crew members lost.
I remember Mike H talking about this in one of his earlier posts and thinking about the attitude of survival and the attitude that most of us had of being invincible. Maybe the power of positive thinking.
Did any of you have a similar experience in Vietnam?

Total agree with you Dave.
Lucky for me: I'm the one who set up schedules for my pilots and crews in my flight every day. Duc & Dan are the two youngest copilots, but they always having flown with me. I really don't worry about their experiences, their skills,.. but for about their positve attitude. relax & calm, I believe with that, they can make home if something's happen to me.. so frightened, so erratic It killed your smart, your head.. and It did show up this situation.. very clear and many times.

Dap,,
If I remember correctly, that is called "self-prophesied fate"
where a person is so convinced they are going to die, they(perhaps) put themselves into such a position that the prophesy actually comes true,,,and I also believe that is a common belief, especially in combat. I don't understand why, but I guess it is a fact of live in a stessful situation. I do not envy anyone in that postion, or anyone accompanying them.
There was a case in Saigon where a young Airman was so convinced he was going to die, he just wandered out onto the flightline in front of a landing aircraft. I guess one of perhaps many

Glad you made it through,,,,,
