Bruce, even with my little pocket camera I managed to get this one in focus a little better.

I had so much fun with the Pickle Thread that, when I saw this thing today, I couldn't pass it up.

One hint, it is rather large, depending on your size, or "how" you came across it.

What is it!

it looks like a pinecone, or maybe a bear terd. If its a bear terd it looks like it hurt.

ok i change my mind, i see prickley things which leads me to believe this is some type of nut and that surface (outer layer) is to protect the nut itself so it woint get eaten.

It looks to be some sort of extraterestrial pod. They have a large collection of them in Nevada.

Second guess: It might be a close up of a road kill rattlesnake skin that has lain out in the sun. Texas has lots of rattlers last time I checked.

Although these are small, they make a "big" impression when you step on them. I don't know the name, but it looks like a greener version of the prickley brown seed pods that fall out of trees. It also looks like you've stepped on it.

I don't think it is a Pineapple, but I don't have any idea what it is, I will guess a cuckleburr, but they aren't large.
