Default transfer bar safety

I'm new to revolvers. What (briefly) is a transfer bar safety, and would you require one on a revolver that you would own? Thanks.

Simply put, the transfer bar safety is designed to keep the hammer from contacting the firing pin (or the hammer nose from contacting the cartridge primer) unless the trigger is pulled all the way to the rear. This prevents the gun from firing should it be dropped.

It's a good thing.
