.303 British is a cartridge, not a rifle.
Post-up pics of your new rifle for more information

That's a Lee-Enfield No. 4 Mk I
It certainly wasn't made in 1889.. More useful information may be obtained here: http://world.guns.ru/rifle/repeating...enfield-e.html http://world.guns.ru/userfiles/image...1288250998.jpg And here: http://www.americanrifleman.org/Arti...?id=2203&cid=8

the number you see thats very faint is the rack number thats applied so a soldier can find his own weapon when put into the rack in the armoury , its not a serial or date
these are very common and can be bought for between 300 and 450 in the US depending on condition |

there'll be some numbers either under the safety or the opposite side on the "wrist" band of the stock ( the diagonal band thats just behind the trigger , check both sides for the SN ) your second pic has a partia; showing 52XXX upside down

Should be under the bolt handle ,on the buttstock socket, and on the back of the bolt handle itself. If they match, more's the better. Quite often the don't . Also may be on the top of the barrel at the rear under the wood.

No matter what the original serial number might have been, the rifle was FTR'd and the new serial number assigned by Fazakerley is Y 145. Renumbering was standard practice for rifles that underwent FTR (Factory Thorough Repair - factory rebuild).
The rifle was imported into the U.S. before late 1968 since it has the old Country of Origin (COO) mark rather than the import stamp mandated under GCA 68. Jim |
