Hi there, I just joined the site and think it's awesome. A few years back, I purchsed a S&W mod 27-2 in Blue with a 6" barrel. The gun appeared to be unfired in the original box. Now, the gun has less than 20 rounds thru it & has been a real treat to shoot. I'm just wondering what year it was made & possibly a value as I was considering selling it?? When purchased, I was told that a store owner in Detroit purchased the gun just prior to the riots for protection around 1965or 1966. Serial #S254586. The gun is truely like new with no scratches of anykind. Any help would be appreciated.. Lawmanmike....

Well S&W stopped pinning and recessing the guns after 82. So its older than that. Those guns to me seem to shoot better than new ones even if they are a little older. "they dont make'em like they used to"
But some one with a blue book could give you the production years and value.

Hi, Lawman Mike.........welcome to TFF.
You're right about the manufacture date. According to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, #S254586 was made in 1964 to 1965. Most likely 1965. Blue Book value: 100% - $400 98% - $375 Add 10% for pinned barrel and recessed cylider Add $28 for white outline rear sight. |

Blue Book undervalues these "S prefix" guns. It would likely sell for $550-$600 in the condition you described.
